I just rewatched the play in question. Napheesa’s heels were behind the arc, and she was NOT making an attempt to block any shot. She was just trying to take a charge. It probably should have been a charge except for the matter of where her heels were, but in fact, it was a bad call. The charge on KLS a few plays later might indeed have been a make-up call.Nope. You didn't quote the relevant part of the rule. Specifically the rules say "this restriction shall not prohibit a defender, located within the restricted area, from attempting to block a shot." Since she was attempting to block the shot, the restricted area rule does not apply. She still could be called for a normal foul of course
I don’t understand how any referee can be expected, in a split second, to process all the inputs needed to make this call. The referee has to look at the contact to make a normal charge/block call, but then must also look at the defender’s feet, and then determine whether the defender was the primary defender, whether she was attempting to block a shot, and where the drive started. How can any official do that and make an instant call?
