Too late Dan, the time to split was long ago, and we're lucky that it didn't happen before we could upgrade the football program and get to where we're at.
The closest the league ever was to a split was 1994. The talk was there in 2003, but it never reached anywhere near the point of activation. In 1994? Different story. Virginia Tech and Temple were begging into the Big East for all sports, and not just football, and the football schools wanted them (including Miami, Syracuse, PItt, WVU and BC)....but they were blocked by the rest of the membership for full inclusion.
1 week after VTech and Temple were officially told they were staying as football only members, adn the basketball league would NOT be expanded - by Tranghese - Tranghese was on the phone with AD Rosenthal at ND and working out the invite for ND to join the league - with the exact same arrangement they've got right now with the ACC. The agreement to schedule Big East teams on occasion by ND _ with a conference of which they already regularly scheduled many of the members?
If you tend to believe the principle that history repeats itself, it would seem that the internal divide among the ACC, is pretty damn deep at this point in time.
