This is going to be one of the wildest additions of dominoes to date.
The next three months are going to shape the future of mid-major athletics out west for a long time....
In the next three weeks, I believe the next move is made: Utah Valley to the MW. Matt Brown has reported this is a possibility. Smurthwaite has reported that the league is looking to add two. I believe the 12th school will be UC San Diego. (The Big Mountain Podcast who seems to have sources and has been very accurate with realignment recently has five candidates for the two spots: UC San Diego, Utah Valley, St. Mary's, San Francisco, and UC Irvine.) This gets the MW to 12 basketball schools and 9 football schools. They then stand pat.
In May, I believe we have our next Division 1 defection: New Orleans. This leaves the Southland with 11 members. They add UT-Arlington to fill in the slot and get back to 12.
The Summit then makes its move and adds....Abilene Christian and Tarleton State to get into Texas. This gets the league to 11 members.
The WAC is now down to two members: Southern Utah and Utah Tech. We will get back to them.
At some point in the late May or early June, the Pac-12 finalizes a TV deal worth 8.5 million per school. They ultimately are unable to pick off any schools from the AAC so they add Texas State to get to 8 Olympic sports members and 9 basketball members. But they are not done....
they add one basketball addition: St. Mary's. This gets the league to 10 basketball members. But they are not done...
The league then agrees to a scheduling alliance with Sacramento State in football. The agree stipulates four games a year in November.
This leaves the WCC with 8, the WAC with 2 (assuming Texas defections), the Big West with 9, and Sacramento State hanging in the wind (the Big Sky is likely kicking them out).
To me the big fish left is the WCC: they add UCSB, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and Denver to get to 12.
The Summit stays at 10 (with 2 Texas additions).
The Big West is down to 6. They add the two Utah schools and Sacramento State to get back to 9.
Out east, another school bites the Division 1 dust: Saint Peter's. The MAAC stays at 12.
The NEC replaces Saint Francis (PA) with Bentley to get back to 9.
The Sun Belt then adds Western Kentucky to replace Texas State.
CUSA stands firm at 10 members.
This wildness leaves us with 362 Division 1 schools and 31 conferences.
