Do the actions of children affect the perceptions of their parents - absolutely. And that can be especially true if their children pursue the same career path and get advancement based on their last name.

Tyler got his professional jobs because his last name was Summitt, whether Pat made phone calls or not on his behalf, the implication was that he had her endorsement.

It doesn't affect the numbers she put up, but it does put some tarnish on her reputation. It can certainly withstand this, but ...

Another one:

This may be splitting hairs, but I would draw a distinction between tarnishing Pat Summitt's personal reputation or coaching legacy, which I don't think really happened here, and tarnishing the Summitt family name, which I think is undeniable.

Jimbo has it closest to right. This writer is WAY off base, unless Pat encouraged her son to date his players, then Pat's legacy would take a hit. I wonder if this writer changes her tune should one of her children get a DUI or get a "D" in English class that would irreparably tarnish HER legacy !!

Complete silliness here. The tragedy is that there is a pregnant student and a wife betrayed. Innocent lives have been sent into tailspins.

RockyM : Sorry I didn't see you started this thread. I'll bring over my post as I put it on the Tyler Summitt La Tech thread......

As an aside from this horrible story we are now getting more headline grabbing articles written by irresponsible reporters like this one on Yahoo Sports:

Tyler Summitt's indiscretion damages more than just his own reputation

This does NOTHING to "Tarnish" Pat Summitt's Legacy and the writer should be called out for making such a foolish statement. This is the kind of Journalism we DON'T need these days. Just plain stupid IMO.

EDIT: Want to hear a good one - The reporter "Edited" this story and changed the phrasing in the article to say the "Name" Summitt. is tarnished. The original version of this story said it "tarnished her accomplishments". Internet reporting is really something isn't it? Say something stupid and then go back and re-phrase it so you can flat out deny being an idiot.

I actually was pretty impressed with this - I thought she made the clear distinction between Pat's personal legacy and coaching record and the family name - she slipped up getting a little tongue tied in her wrap-up but otherwise was on point.

I agree. Sorry, I intended my comment as a continuation of the conversation taking place here in the thread rather than as a rebuttal to what Jemele says in the video, but I didn't make that at all clear in my post.

It depends on how involved Pat was in pushing her son through the coaching ranks.

Like I said elsewhere, no 23-year-old was getting the LaTech job unless their name was "Summitt". Did LaTech fall into the nepotism trap on their own, or was Pat cheerleading for her son behind the scenes?

That said, Pat's coaching resume/reputation -- personal questions aside -- stands on its own and shouldn't be affected.

Why does this matter? A 23 year old should have enough brains to know that you can't have inappropriate relations with a player. Unless he's a complete idiot which is definitely possible. As far as Pat's legacy goes, I don't see why her idiot son's actions should detract from it one bit.

Only if she actually actively pushed him on others in which case it calls into question her character judgement in pushing him beyond his capacity to perform. If I recommend someone for a job and push for their hire, I am very definitely putting my own reputation on the line - am I responsible for all their actions, no, but if they are incapable of performing the job to professional standards, then yes it does reflect back poorly on me and my evaluation process.
