Time for New England's only annual PGA Tour stop to shine. A chance for TPC River Highland to offer minimal resistance the week after the US Open.

As a signature event all the PGA big names will be there.

A short course and a par 70, sub-60 round alerts can happen any day.

Great four hole finishing stretch.

Tourney used to be known for up and comers getting first PGA Tour wins and a stepping stone to solid PGA careers. As a signature event there is no Cinderella. Every one in the field can win.

Playoffs are definitely a probability.

The BY curse means collectively we will list 50 players and none of us will be right.

I'll go first. Gimme the lefty Scotsman, MacIntyre.
 
I miss going to that event. I remember one year, following John Daly, I had drank just as much he probably did the night before and on his 2nd shot on a par 5, right before he addressed the ball i ripped ass so loud that he stepped back, laughed and regrouped. The old couple next me were appalled. And if I remember correctly, the wife actually said "well, I never!.."
Vijay won that one I think.
Oh the ICHSDJCBOTC.

Great NE tournament! I still miss when it was played (actually crushed) at my hometown course Wethersfield Country Club. Trevino was fun to watch and he married a Wethersfield girl Claudia Bove. Another Wethersfield resident, Bruce Edwards, started (and continued) on the bag of a young upcoming golfer Tom Watson.

I worked at WCC out of college. I probably overserved you in the men’s grille more than once.
 
I believe this is basically accurate.
At one point the course has to cross a public street. From one green to the next tee. A young girl [maybe around 8 or 9] lived in one of the homes near that stretch. She sold lemonade to fans as they crossed the street. Lee Trevino bought a lemonade.

A few years later he married her.

When the event was at Wethersfied and Sammy Davis was the sponsor the pro-am had a ton of
bigtime Hollywood celebs....Jackie Gleason comes to mind for one.

I was a townie and would sneak into the GHO through holes in the fence. I played bb on Al Wamister’s CYO team. He was the ranger on the course (had 1 leg and a fast cart). Great guy. He would frequently catch us sneaking onto the course to play one of the par 3s and would say finish the hole and get lost.
 
When at Wethersfield Charlie Sifford won the GHO in 1967. It was the first win ever on the PGA tour by an
African American. That event and his win truly made history. His whole career was remarkable.
In addition to two PGA wins [Los Angeles was his second] he was awarded the Presidential Medal of
Freedom....awesome!

They drew a lot of big names. I got autographs from Gerald Ford and Bob Hope on a program somewhere. Met Scatman Crothers (Hong Kong Phooey) waiting to use a portapotty! LOL

I'm watching Full Swing on Netflix (awesome show) and when one of the star golfers is having trouble and his wife is trying to console him, I'ld prefer a wife (assuming that he has been married/dating 5+years) to say, "Partner, you have me, a hot great body female that men droll over, that loves you, so sack up, get out of your funk, and make bank! I need some new shoes.
 
I’ve probably told this story before, but in 1997 a friend and I were watching guys on the driving range at River Highlands. My buddy is a very good golfer. He was obsessed with the swing of one particular unknown player, Stewart Cink. Cink was a young guy with no following but my buddy said his swing was perfect. He’d never seen him before. We followed him all week while drinking beers and talking golf. As the days went by and he kept competing it became more and more interesting. He ended up winning. My buddy still brags about calling that one.

I think it was more than a few years later. I believe he waited until she was legal

We got a UConn connection to Augusta National.

Ricky Moore attended high school in Augusta. I remember reading that Jim Calhoun
went down there to speak at Ricky's graduation. I assume Ricky had already committed to UConn.
BTW: Ricky would work at the golf club during The Masters. JC got a very nice perk on that visit.
Ricky's Dad [Buck Moore] was a caddy at the club...also a caddy on the PGA tour at times.

I believe that Buck arranged with a member to play with JC...JC's first round at Augusta. I suspect
Buck knew of some members who were big hoop fans and would enjoy playing with JC. A non-
member had to play with a member...that was their rule back then and I suspect it still is.

Nice trade-off: JC...avid golfer...gets to play at Augusta...and a couple of hoop fans get to hear JC
tell funny stories about big-time college ball.

I believe Buck caddied for a pro in the same foursome when Ray Allen caddied for JC in the Celebrity Pro-Am in the mid 90s.
