The Game Misses Pat Summitt

To be accurate, Pat won 6 NCAA titles from 1974-75 through 2003-04, so not half as much. And yes she could have won an AIAW title maybe, but why not start with the NCAA era to keep the nature of the title at least nominally on the same basis? Pat won 8 titles during her 27 or officially 28 years as head of UTenn during the NCAA era. Sure it's a rival coach to Husky fans, but fair is fair.

Yup you got it. I must have been missing a finger

If you watch racing you will see what happens when a participant strolls into the pits of another racer. Don't do it. Even to congratulate . We did that once, lesson learned.

Probably a good read in Tenn, that's about it. South Bend, too, since like Tenn, ND has never beaten UConn in a NC game.

And what in the #$@! qualifies McGraw to comment on what's classy?

maybe more along the lines as a confession...just sayin'

For all the respect I have for what Summitt achieved, this myth that Pat was some sort of angel drives me crazy. In her early years Pat was not above raiding other programs for players and later in her career using hard-sell tactics in recruiting HS players. There was the occasion where, as the coach of Tenn., she approached a couple of her Olympic teammates at the FF and they shortly thereafter dumped their teams and transferred to Tenn. Then there was the over-the-top methods used in Ann Strothers' official recruiting visit to Rockytop. In fact many of the rules about contact with players and recruits along with what programs can and cannot offer recruits were written due to her behavior.

Now I am one who would want my coach to anything within the rules to improve their program and I give Summitt credit for being ruthless and proactive in this respect. But when people like Maria start in with their praise of her methods while at the same time condemning other programs I want to vomit.

JMO of course

When it's Cornelius, you have to consider the source. Anyone can say anything in print. Doesn't mean that it is the absolute truth.

The overriding point of this article was not to pay tribute to Pat, it was an attack on the character of Geno Auriemma. Of that there is no doubt. A tribute to Pat could have been written without the innuendos and without the quote from Muffet McGraw which, of course, was directed at Geno. I can not say I'm surprised to see this piece; the likelihood that it would be written grew with each national championship Geno has won since Pat retired. Nor am I surprised by the sanctimonious style in which the piece is written. After Notre Dame defeated South Carolina in their semifinal game at the FF, the writer actually announced on twitter -- to @NCAAWomensBKB -- that she had just watched her last NCAA women's game for the season. Ino other words, she was letting NCAA Women's Basketball know that she would not watch UConn win another national championship. Who does something like that?

I have no problem with any tribute that is paid to Pat Summitt and what she meant to women's basketball. I do have a problem with a writer using Pat's unfortunate illness and the anniversary of her retirement to mask what is really an attack by innuendo on the success and character of Geno Auriemma. As JS said, that is a travesty.
