I wasn't born before much 1990, but I do remember two gophers, Mac & Tosh, from the Looney Tunes/ Bugs Bunny show, who must have been based on Alphonse and Gaston. They are way too polite to one another almost at the cost of getting caught by the farmers dog.
"You go first". "oh no, I wouldn't think of it" Plus they had proper English accents and quoted Shakespeare a lot.
