Geno has spoken out about this in a couple of forums recently and admittedly it is easy to do so when you are, as Tara puts it, "on the top of the mountain." But those other nearly greats who shun true competition out of conference should be ashamed of themselves for the craven pursuit of numbers and not excellence. This includes Tennessee and Baylor in my book. There are others. Maryland and Wagner, puleez! Why UC Davis for UConn some would ask: because of the Stanford UConn game we are all about to enjoy.

Those who say "our conference is so tough we cannot afford to wear ourselves out on nonconference foes" have a convenient excuse to feed the non-inquiring minds of the fans, but the statistics/point spreads don't bear them out. Of course, they are only emulating their football programs with their nonconference schedules. But, as Geno so accurately observes: to grow the woman's game the nonconference cupcake schedule will not get it done.

So, on the eve of this really fine rivalry game between two great programs and two magnificent coaches, I salute them and say let the rest of the pretenders take note and ponder the wisdom of ducking such games.
