The expanded College Football Playoff off to a rough start

So in this nutso proposal, instead of having a 16 team bracket where 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, etc., you have:

Week 1:
13 vs 16
14 vs 15

Week 2:
3 vs lowest winning seed
4 vs second lowest winning seed
5 vs 12
6 vs 11
7 vs 10
8 vs 9

This means the 1 and 2 seeds (presumably the SEC and Big Ten champs) get double byes into Week 3.

This is the stupidest approach to a 16 team tournament I have ever seen.
Tell me you haven’t watched a conference basketball tournament in a decade without telling me ….

Now they can focus on the 16-team format (likely) from 2026.

BIG is going to regret this when all the SEC teams are seeded to avoid each other and the BIG teams are paired off against each other.

So winning a conference championship game gets you nothing.
The conference title game could get you a place OUT of the CFP if you have a bad game....so there's that....

Like SMU last year?

Conference championships became worthless the minute they got rid of divisions, anyway. The obvious move would be to just get rid of them if not for the whole money thing.

Between realignment and playoff expansion, the sport has backed itself into a hell of a corner. Mega conferences and 14+ team playoffs do not go together at all.

The optimal path is to be the 3rd place team in the SEC or B1G, or be ND. Eg, PennSt had OhioSt not gagged against Michigan. The Nittanies and/or ND would've likely gotten a bye without having to play a CCG.

Changing the format after a single year is shortsighted. Just one man's opinion, but P4 college football is borderline unwatchable.

This one im ok with. I forget if they did auto reseeding but im up for that too. What I dont want is multiple automatic bids.

The tweaks are just part of debugging the system. It will go to 16 soon enough. Should have been done decades ago. As for the conference playoffs, they are a money grab. If they don't continue to produce revenue they disappear.

I don't feel bad for the SEC grueling schedule. They made it that way. Instead of gathering every major power school, maybe realize the impact that will have on your members' regular season results. The schedule is a problem of their own making.

The SEC sees the way it piled up the basketball bids and half the baseball super regionals and thinks why should we be limited to 4-5 teams in football
