OT: The Cover Song is at Least as Good As - or Better - than the Original

My favorite song. I don't know if it's better. I mean it's the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy For The Devil".

But then, I mean it's Natalie Merchant singing.

Strangely enough, I really like Miley Cyrus' version. To me, she seems more suited to rock/blues than pop.

Agree about Miley's voice, she did an incredible job on the 'Blacklist' version of Nothing Else Matters for Metallica.

Not sure that anyone does Chuck Berry 'better' than Chuck, he was a true original for sure.
Promised Land by Elvis works for me
(Anyone else get a picture in their head of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith upside down in a black Ford LTD?)

No need to post a link, and I didn't go through all 5 pages, but I think the obvious choice here is "I Will Always Love You" covered by the great Whitney Houston. Not that Dolly isn't great, too.

Wooden Ships by Crosby, Stills, & Nash is one of my most fav songs.

The Jefferson Airplane's version is right up there with the CS&N classic:

Speaking of Dolly, that reminds me. Dolly doing a cover of Collective Soul's "Shine".

One of my personal favorites, this cover of an old Bo Diddley song. You need to play the intro really loud.

I was about to post the Doors’ version. This is what makes the Doors much more than Jim — the drums and guitar are awesome in this one.

Probably one of my favorite songs of all time...the radio volume is definitely cranked up for this Ian Hunter cover.

Lucifer sings Creep. This Tom Ellis cover made me find the Radiohead original and I really, really like each version equally so...

Seven Bridges Road- first recorded in 1969 by an artist by the name of Steve Young. Ian Mathews did an incredible cover of it in 1973:

Originally by Elvis Costello, I like Linda’s version better. Of course, there is the fact that I was hopelessly in love with Linda Ronstadt for years in my yute! 😳

The creaking sound you hear at the beginning of the song is David Crosby's sailboat, moored in Santa Barbara, CA.

We haven't had much by the Grateful Dead so far. Shame on you all. Here's their cover of "Long Black Limousine," a true country song composed by Vern Stovall and Bobby Jones.

Neil Young wrote it and did it first, but Nicolette Larsen did one very wonderful version of it:

Suzy Bogguss did a great cover of the Ian Tyson song "Someday Soon." I like it better than the Judy Collins cover of the same song.

Nothing beats the original, but then-18 y.o. Diana Ankudinova's version is pretty darned good (not to dismiss Brandon Stone's contribution):
