I read this in another article today and thought it was pretty interesting in light of the $415 limit on championship rings -
"in the 1870s, the winners of an intercollegiate rowing regatta on Lake Saratoga were given silver goblets worth $500—this at a time when the average annual wage in the U.S. was $300."
