The Case For Sarah Strong as a Generational Talent

Part of me wants to say "let's at least wait till after her junior season so as to have a more complete set of stats", but then I watch her play and am in awe of it - so you know what? Give her every accolade you want. I think she has, and is, earned/earning it!

I think we already called the term generational ridiculous in another thread. I've been following the team for 26 years: how many have we had in that time period? Strong does have a good chance of going down as one of the all-time greats, though.
I totally agree about the generational label. I really don't know what that means. The best player in a span of 25 years, 20 years? So go back ten years before Sarah and take it to ten years after? It is really an overused, hyperbolic, little understood term. I will say this however. Her offense, defense, basketball smarts, intuitive sense of the game, exertion of will, and repertoire in her 6'2" frame are unlike anything that we have seen in a very long time, perhaps ever.

One play did it for me. It was against Tennessee at the Hartford Center. Sarah had just blocked a shot and grabbed the ball off the block with time dwindling down in the third quarter. she passed it up ahead to Azzi who dribbled in a perfect diagonal to Allie and gave her the ball for the quarter ending 3 point make and a crowd that exploded. I thought "What a great play by Azzi". 'What vision". Turns out if you watch carefully on the replay, she can see Sarah yelling at Azzi from in back of her to get it to Allie. From where she was, in back court, she saw how the play would develop. Nuff said.

100% Whenever I need a lift, I replay the 3rd quarter of that game. After Sarah gives it up to Azzi, she jogs to the middle of the floor and then retreats to Tennessee’s free throw line to be in position and after the horn she claps hard twice. That play got Sarah psyched. In one of the short videos produced, I think, they show Sarah talking to Azzi like you said (view from behind).

UConn has been fortunate to have many All Americans over the years. In my opinion they have had four generational players. To me it’s a player that can take total control of a game on their own. They are Diana Taurasi; Maya Moore; Brianna Stewart and Paige Bueckers. I believe Sarah Strong can and will join these other four players. I’m sure that some of you will disagree.

No one seems to be arguing about Sarah Strong's talent and potential. We're arguing about the use of a term that means "occurring once in a generation".

Is Sara or Azzi the “generational” player of the year?

Seriously though, no player is generational until they meet 8 or 9 of the following 10 criteria

  • A national championship in college
  • A POTY in college
  • A wnba championship
  • A wnba POTY
  • a wnba DPOY or steals/blocks title
*Bigs a rebounding title - Guards a scoring or assist title
  • A wnba playoff MOP
  • An Olympic gold medal
  • eight WNBA all star selections
*A ten year WNBA career with at least 100 double doubles

Stewie is vested. Once A’ja completes her 10 year minimum, I will have to admit that generational players can be of relatively close age

Here is another one, how many GOATs have there been? Perhaps a little bit overused. LOL, anything more than 1 is overused.

As icing on the cake, you might want to add being national HS Player of the Year.

A generation is typically defined as a 20-30 year period. One of the great things about being a fan of UConn WBB is that we get to experience a “generational talent” every few years or so: Rebecca, DT, Maya, Stewie, Paige, Azzi, Sarah.

Who’s got next up? 😎

I was there and we had great seats but I did not see that Sarah said something to Azzi at the time. We were tied at halftime. The 3rd quarter was epic. Kayleigh went coast to coast two possessions in row in that game and then showed more passion then I have seen all year from her and that is saying a lot.

You saw the block, the recovery of the ball, the pass to Azzi, Azzi going to Allie. Kayleigh was actually ahead on the break but being at least partially covered, another reason why the Sarah instruction was so brilliant. When the ball left Allie's hands you knew it was in. I thought the roof was going to collapse.

For sure! So much fun, so exciting. It is a reminder that at a live basketball game, there are really no bad seats. I sat in an "endzone seat" at the Barclay Center and I saw the play from behind when Blanca was charged an offensive foul for a push off as she drove to the hoop. The BY was disputing that call. I took my 9th grade team to the Verizon Center to see Georgetown- ND men and we sat in the $15 seats. (nosebleed) I saw what the influence of a 7-footer has on a game (Roy Hibbert) from literally 30,000 feet.
Those short videos produced by UConn are sensational, including the KK craziness at the end. I'm going to search for the one after the Tenn game. Later.

Thesis: right on
Why would anyone disagree?

For sure. As an old MS science teacher, studying evolution, I would define a generation as the length of time for an organism to have offspring. Human is born and basically 20 years after can have offspring. We are a generation, our parents are then a generation, their parents are a generation. Dogs can have offspring after only 4-6 months. Fruit flies can reproduce after about 3 weeks, I think.
Personally, I like the term generational better than GOAT. Times change, the game changes, players change, coaching changes. BTW how can Bill Russell not be the GOAT? Is Ali better than Dempsey, Marciano, Louis, etc?

I was at that Barclay game also. It's just great to see them live. You get a totally different understanding of the game and what Geno is doing.

There are a lot of people who would say "How can MJ not be the GOAT?". Who is the GOAT in baseball? Any talk about "Generational Talent" or "GOAT" is always best over a steak and beverage(s) of your choice. It's a great discussion best made in person.

MJ is the GOAT for sure during the 1990's generation.
You're right! More fun arguments. Bobby Orr best ever?
Babe Ruth baseball! Pull up baseball reference and check out the numbers. And he came right after the "deadball era".
See what I mean??

Right there with you. Because we have been saying or hearing that term for a few years now and in that timespan we have had quite a few "generational talents".
