Mano’s Matchup Breakdown:

Shawshank VS It’s a Wonderful Life

There’s just something about the ultimate triumph, and more importantly the build up to it, that makes Shawshank one of the most cathartic movies of all time. Even though there are setbacks along the way, things end poorly for characters that we grow to like, impossible odds seem stacked against our protagonists, and even though much of the climax is handled through voiceover, it all comes together in a most satisfying way. That’s why it’s my choice here.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a fine film, but something about its schmaltzy nature has never quite clicked for me. Don’t get me wrong, the acting performances and direction are top notch but the central mechanic has always felt a bit like a cheap trick.

Goodfellas vs Silence of the Lambs was poorly seeded.

That's a final four matchup

Silence created a genre that spawned many other drama/thrillers, shame.

Die Hard VS The Princess Bride

Die Hard is definitely one of the absolute best pure action movies of all time. And Bruce Willis’ McClane one of the best conceived action heroes of all time as well. The Princess Bride is a sweet, charming, oftentimes hilarious movie with great heroes, so-so villains (Wallace Shawn is a standout, but not the big bad, understandably) and a few characters that work in the gray whom we come to root for. It just can’t stand up to the incredible action and plot twists, great heroes, and iconic villains that inhabit Nakatomi Plaza.

Goodfellas VS The Silence of the Lambs

Two amazing movies. Both endlessly rewatchable. Two of the greatest psychopaths in cinema history in Dr. Lecter and Tommy DeVito. There is just something about Lambs that elevates it for me. Every scene is taut and incredibly well acted. Demme doesn’t waste a second of screen time. It gets me every time. I love Goodfellas too, it’s a most entertaining watch, it falters a bit in its 3rd act for me. Maybe it’s the Sicilian in me, but I just don’t love a rat (more on that later).

Winner: The Silence of the Lambs
