The Matrix is a really fun and innovative movie. I enjoy watching it. I think it's overseeded as a 4, and Star Wars underseeded--another incredibly influential movie. I think the original Star Wars is better, but I suspect it will suffer somewhat because, like so many movies of its time, it's a pretty slow film. I still picked it.

Ugh. Die Hard is the answer to favorite Christmas movie. It's a technically perfect action movie, I think. It created a whole genre of copycats, including it's own. I still went with Cool Hand Luke (despite it's annoyingly overt symbolism at times) because I appreciate the way it's able to be an allegory while not being in your face about it.

I enjoy Fight Club. It's really fun. Wizard of Oz is a better movie: more important historically in pop culture and with regards to cinematic history.

I'm not sure you can really call The Matrix overseeded but you could definitely make the case for Star Wars being underseeded. I think a lot of people in making their lists wanted to probably only include one SW film and opted for Empire as a result. In fact they probably both stole votes from one another.

Did you submit a proper list to me or just your joke, worst movies of all-time list?

What do you mean by "original Star Wars"? Are you referring to Episode I?

Star Wars is better than the Matrix, certainly more iconic. Woefully under seeded here. Results reflect that.

Wizard of Oz better not lose to garbage like The Fight Club.

It's overseeded because it's not one of the best 16 films of all time. That's all I mean. I think you're right on what happened with the two (only two) good Star Wars flicks.

So much of it depends on how old you are.

I watched Star Wars on endless TBS re-runs as a kid.

I watched the Matrix as a high school kid and it blew my mind.

???

Who would ever call a movie that came out 22 years after a different one the "original"?

Who would ever consider putting the flaming garbage that is Phantom Menace on par with any of these films, or the Matrix?

I meant to get around to it, but never did. It doesn't matter, anyway. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, I don't think (though I'd have moved up Casablanca probably and moved in 2001 and maybe North by Northwest. A lot of Hitchcock, some Bergson and Kurasawa, and Doctor Strangelove, in terms of films where my vote would have been meaningless.

I'm with you honestly, but the lists were a broad mix of "best", and "most well liked". Objectively Seven Samurai and Ran both need to be on the list. It's a mixed list. Hell, where is Henry the V (1989)? I probably forgot to nominate it, but I should have.

Neither are really among the top 64 movies of all time. Star Wars though, is clearly among the most important movies of all time. And I think you could argue that the Matrix lands in the top 64 by that criteria as well.

What we have on this list are a bunch of movies that are
1. Technically brilliant
2. Socially or otherwise important, including groundbreaking in the field of cinema
3. Fun, entertaining and popular

And many are a mix of those. Any Will Ferrell movie is just #3. Star Wars is way up on 2 and 3. I'd give The Matrix, Princess Bride, Animal House and anything else that has firmly established itself in our culture some points for #2.

Looks like Cool Hand Luke is going down. Tough match up, at least for the BY crowd.

Stay down Luke, you're beat.

Thanks for doing this poll, Mano. It's interesting, and a lot of work for you. It does prove one thing. Many Boneyarders know just as little about movies as they do about basketball.
