Olde Levon knew he was in the presence of greatness. You may know the story, but Clapton had asked to join The Band and they said (and I paraphrase) "but we already have a lead guitarist" [Robbie Robinson] and gently turned him down. Not sure if Clapton's inquiry had occurred before or after The Last Waltz was filmed, but there is definitely a friendly guitar duel going on in the video between Clapton and Robinson!
