I just finished reading an excellent article in The Athletic highlighting the friendships between the families of our players. Apparently the families of E, Paige and Saylor are staying and dining together in a rental unit in SA. A very positive reflection of how the UCONN family is more than current and former players.

It includes E watching a video, with the team at her side, from her family congratulating her on her 1000 point milestone. It brought E to tears. If you subscribe to The Athletic don't miss this story. During the recent weeks they have had stories on Paige (of course) and one a couple of days ago about (what else?) the PB/CC matchup.

They also named a first/second and third team of AA's Paige and C Clark both made 1st team, but Boston was named their POY and Brenda F got the COY honor. Kind of interesting that no Stanford player made any of the AA teams nor was TVD named COY even though her team is rated the best in WCBB, but w/o one of the 15 best players ??? This drew a few reader comments.

There is no possible argument for Boston being POY.

Lately, when I think about Evina, the word that comes to mind is, “redemption.” For a player so totally committed to her teammates and dedicated to working incredibly hard, Evina’s time in Knoxville must have been very difficult. Seeing her joy and emotion, along with the love her teammates hold for her is a beautiful thing.

I will sneak one excerpt in which is so Storrs

Eva Westbrook and Fuller met for the first time in Storrs this winter when Eva was shoveling snow off Evina’s car. Fuller and Paige Bueckers approached them and said hello. From there, the mothers bonded much like their daughters have over the course of the season.

VERY nicely said. A few of her teamates were shedding a few tears as well. Being purely selfish, I hope E stays at UConn for another year.

I agree. If Boston had averaged 18 ppg, and the team had lost 1-2 games, a reasonable—maybe even a strong case—could be made. But that wasn’t the reality. I have Paige and Evans as the top 2 players and Clarke and Hillmon as the next 2.

It is truly astounding to me that they could name Boston as player of the year. There are at least three, perhaps as many as five players who had better seasons than her! It is so unfair when these awards become some sort of popularity contest that are used by publications and/or corporate interests to drive their agendas/narratives rather than simply giving it to the player who has (as objectively as possible) produced the best season! I could understand if she had (objectively) had one of the top two or three seasons. In that case, clearly people can disagree and come to different conclusions. However, in this case, she is not even in the conversation with Clark, Bueckers, or Evans! I think Cunane had a better year as well. Finally, I imagine they are squirming in their seats after their coach of the year got a brutal coaching lesson from a coach in his first season at a university that has become an afterthought over the last ten years.

The Athletic is a venture capital funded, subscription based sports reporting service that started up about 5 years ago. They have slowly expanded their national footprint with 5 different infusions of capital from investors totaling $139 million. Over 5 years they have added offices in major cities and expanded the number of writers to over 300.

They have some very good writers, although the best tend to focus on professional sports. Their NCAA basketball writers are OK, but tend to have mostly covered men’s basketball. I don’t believe there is a lot of in depth knowledge about women’s basketball at the Athletic.
