a) Deferred contracts are common. Ken Griffey Jr just got his last 3+million dollar payment from the Reds in 2024. He hasn't played since 2008 and was the 6th highest paid player on the Reds last year. And just wait until Ohtani is getting 68m a year in 2040.

b) The Mets used the payroll freed up by the deferred contract to sign Mike Hampton who led them to a World Series in 2000 (Hampton won the NLCS MVP). Hampton then left via FA to Colorado, the Mets got a compensatory pick and used it to take David Wright.
