Let's see who can predict this one (before tomorrow)!

I'm thinking ..................hmm, let me think...

When is the next competition for the national team?

Does this mean that to make the Olympic squad, you should seriously consider going to SC now ?

I don't think it matters who the coach is. Seriously. Ann Donovan was the coach, and she's universally awful. Those players are immensely talented and self motivated and can win without an offense being installed by the head coach. It's not like they practice together a ton anyway...

I think this is a mistake by USA Basketball. I understand rewarding their own, but has Carol watched South Carolina run offense?
It's not like Dawn is not going to have help. For the U19 team she had Jeff Waltz and Kim Barnes-Arico the offense was fine because we had superior talent.

That probably means that A'ja Wilson will be on the 2020 Olympic team, which is fine because she should be.

I wonder if it means that Tiffany Mitchell may also make that team?

Congrats to Dawn - a huge honor. Not surprised they kept it "within the family" so to speak; Dawn has been in the Team USA coaching mix at the highest level.

Looking forward to the next iteration of the US National Team!

Next major tournament is the FIBA World Cup (formerly known as the World Championships), to be held in Spain in September 2018.

She's got big shoes to fill, wouldn't want that pressure..................better that she coach these pros rather then the younger players.............they actually have to be coached up..................

Anne Donovan was also the coach of the last U.S. national team to lose a major international competition, in 2006.

Based on what? Still a long way to go and some better more accomplished players might come along.

I would have preferred Cheryl Reeves of the Minnesota Lynx.

With Dawn as the Coach, Candace Dupree (Temple - Phoenix Mercury), Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina - Indiana Fever) and maybe A'Ja Wilson (South Carolina) will make the team. I wonder if we will hear the same thing we heard with Geno as the Coach.

Dupree will be 36 in 2020. I highly doubt she will be on the team.
Mitchell is a fine player, but not world class at this moment. I would be skeptical.

The 2020 team is
  • Maya
  • EDD
  • Stewie
  • Tina
  • Griner
for sure.
I would guess Angel (34) and Fowles (35) too.

Augustus (36), DT (38), Whalen (38), Sue (40) are all borderline.

Catchings is the one sure not to be back.

You had players older than her on the last team. My point is, these are former/current players of Dawn Staley.

No Candace?
At least this time, if Parker gets left off again, the incensed orange mobs can go after Dawn now. While somehow finding a way to blame Geno, of course.

I think maybe also, Jewel, Mo, Nneka, Chiney, Kelsey Plum, and...Gabby.

Older players only make it if they are exceptional - like DT, Sue, Catchings - and have a long history of Olympic appearances. No one makes their first Olympics at 36 unless they have some unique skill that the team is lacking. With EDD, Stewie, Tina, Griner, the front line is already well stocked.

I'm looking on the bright side here. With Geno no longer having to divert his attention to the national team, he will become even more focused on building UConn into an unbeatable juggernaut that strikes fear and terror into every other WBB program in the nation.:eek::eek:

I can think of no earthly reason to expect Dupree on the team. I like her as a player, but she is getting up there. Not needed.

If you are suggesting that they would be on the team because Dawn is HC, then you are defacto saying that there were folks on the team because Geno was the head coach. I don't think that is (exactly) true. Possibly a tendency to want players that the HC is comfortable with, but Dawn has been around the national team. Plus, and referring to Dupree, that was many years ago in Dawn's career, I wouldn't assume that Dawn runs the same stuff at an SEC school that she ran at Temple.

Not officially. Personally, I think it's naive to believe the coach has no impact (however slight or indirect it may be) on team selection.

I'll agree it's a factor on the margins, but it's certainly not enough influence to put Candice Dupree or Tiffany Mitchell on the World Championship team. And I wouldn't even pencil Aja Wilson in yet given the depth of established frontcourt players already competing for spots.
