That trivia question last night....a bit more trivia on that game

Last night Meg and Eric asked when was the last time UConn gave up 100 points.
I thought I knew the answer and it turned out I did....UCLA early in the 1998-1999 season.

A bit more came to me:
1: UConn won the game...guessing it was around 113-102.
2: Svetlana was super hot and was poised to break Nykesha Sales' school record [46] set a year or two earlier.
Whether it was foul trouble or something else, she wound up in the high 30's.
3: That game was during TASSK's frosh year...very early in the season....before all the injuries occurred.
4: There was a certain junior recruiting target courtside from Don Lugo High....one Diana Taurasi.
It came down to UCLA and us a year from that game....I figure Dee saw two teams running and gunning without much defense and she figured 'this is for me...no matter who I choose!'. Truth is: she developed into a pretty good defensive player at UConn imo.

I remember that game. Fun game. Frustrating from a defensive point of view, but lots of fun.

That game (and the ND a few weeks later) had me so excited for the rest of the season. That was a team that clearly wasn't going to have to play any defense at all, ever, because there was just no way you were going to outscore them.

This is one game I can't wait to be uploaded on the archive site

Speaking about DT here is a Throw Back Thursday LA Times article from 16 years ago about DT choosing UConn over UCLA, or USC. Small excerpt below, link at bottom.

Diana Taurasi considered UCLA and Olivier recruited her as hard as she has ever recruited any player.
Taurasi, a 6-footer, is a fearless shooter. She is strong enough to wrestle rebounds from 6-5 players and yet is a fluid, graceful shooter and a clever, creative passer.
She can sell tickets, win games and bring other talented players to the school. And she went as far from California as possible.
Why?
"When I went to Storrs on my recruiting trip, there were 10,000 people who came to watch an exhibition game," Taurasi says. "It was so cool. I don't think basketball can ever be that big a deal at home."
That's the easy answer.
