That boatright block....

From Boatright:

“Oh, God. I couldn’t believe he called that. I was, like, four feet away from him. I asked him, ‘What did you see?’ He said, ‘I didn’t see anything, I heard it.’ I said, ‘What did you hear.’ He said, ‘I heard a noise.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you heard the ball.’ I don’t know, it was just a bad call.”

Boatright never complain about calls on the court, so when I saw his reaction I knew the refs had screwed up.

Boat got all ball then hand from my viewpoint in Section 1o2
Boat brushed his arm after the shot was blocked on the way down, clearly visible on replay. Didn't affect the shot in any way. Is that a foul?

No - once the ball is blocked, it essentially becomes a loose ball/rebound. You could call someone for excessive body contact after a block (which is often ignored too), bot not that. Same with a steal - after you get the clean strip or deflection, brushing an arm or body is just incidental (shoving the guy out of the way to get the loose ball would not be). The whole philosophy of calling fouls in basketball is to penalize infractions that create an unfair advantage to the player initiating the contact. There's no advantage at all gained there. Zero.

Also, when you make contact with the ball on a block, your instincts change with how you swing your hand. Instead of just keeping your hand high, you instinctively try to direct the ball on the follow through and bring your hand down. That same arm contact likely wouldn't have happened if he didn't block it.

I believe this is the 1st time this year we have had refs seeing us for the 1st time. I pointed out before the season that the AAC might suffer because the well known guys are in the ACC and BE. Has not happened. That said I think it was the correct call because of contact after the release and while the shooter was in the air.

i mean, he did make contact...because he went straight up to contest but jumped so high that he blocked the shot which carried his momentum back toward the shooter...i pray thats not technically a foul by the book, because it was great d

^edit...what the guy above me said

It's not a shooting foul if the contract occurs after the shot is released. I wish refs would just read the rule book every now and then.

.-.
If the player has returned to the floor he no longer is in the act of shooting and at worse it's a reach in . He was given 3 shots .
At worst it's a 2 shot foul if they were in the bonus. Judgement call on the road which is called wrong.
Those refs kind of called a loose game. The ball handlers got away with using their hands and elbows all night. Hands were allowed on the interior also. That type of officiating usually leads to an ugly game.

You know, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was just quoting Animal House.

.-.
Quite frankly, we can opine about how the refs should interpret plays but if it's about winning then you can't continually put yourself in position late in games to put a poor 3 point shooting team on the foul line for 3 or to stop the clock when you are ahead.
In my view he really needs to work on getting that right because next year the team will really need lots of good decisions from Boat. I actually like Boat just keeping it real.

So I'm currently putting the highlights together, and one thing I noticed about the foul on boat is as soon as he leaves the ground, the ref starts his motion of calling a foul. Honestly. The minute Boatright makes it clear he is going for the block, the ref is already calling the foul. I'll make a vid of it to show you guys.

Exactly. He totally anticipated a foul and when it didn't occur he was already committed and erroneously tagged Boat with a foul.

The ref would also be putting a hand up to signal a three-point attempt, which might look like a foul call.

Here's the video:

He definitely threw his right arm in the air right as Ryan left his feet. You can tell it wasn't both arms, to indicate a 3 pointer, because when the camera pans right his left arm is down.

.-.
You put up two arms when someone makes a three. You put up one when it's in the air. I don't think it was an early foul call, just a really bad foul call.

Dont you go ruining my theory with facts.

The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, not the Germans.

Blaming the bombing of Pearl Harbor on the Germans is a long running and hopefully obvious Boneyard joke. The satirical nature of the post is evidenced by the fact that was made in response to BigErnMcCracken's quip about this board's level of censorship being similar to Germany under Stalin. Speaking of Germany under Stalin, if you didn't think BigErn was joking or referring to East Germany, you should probably have ridden to the rescue on your fact-checking steed after that comment as well.

I understand that the Boneyard is populated by a bunch of degenerates, but do give us a little credit.

Have some people really not seen Animal House?

As a life long History buff and one who remembers the day it happened. February 2 ,1942. I can lend my credence to the boneyard fact that it was the Germans who bombed Pearl Harbor. This is an axiom for all true Boneyarders. Learn and remember it.
