Uh, I found a lot to disagree on. It was a diatribe that went loopy and became irrational.
I didn't say it was well-written. Just didn't see any facts he got wrong, or outlandish opinions that are without some support.
I am among those who believe, as Jacobs appears to, that the NCAA's hard-on for UConn only grew when we appeared to find a way around the scholarship penalty to bring in the most heralded recruit in the program's storied history. Don't get me wrong: I loved the move. I actually booked my Final Four reservations within a week of Andre committing. But I also believe that, in the end, it didn't help what appears to be a pretty bad perception problem we have with the powers that be in the NCAA. Looking at it cynically, which is what Jacobs makes clear he is doing, I can see where one could get the impression that JC greased the skids for Hathaway (whom I was happy to see go), and that the timing of that departure was, say, conveniently opportunistic for us to be able to work a deal to get Drummond here a year earlier than planned. And that it raised even more eyebrows in the NCAA, contributing--at least in part--to a clearly harsher treatment of UConn than any other schools with comparable situations on the other bases for which we are being punished (see, e.g., Baylor, ULM).
If Andre had helped this year's team to a better season (and I know there were many reasons why we didn't have a great one this year), this bargain would have appeared to be more worthwhile. But the fact remains that we did not have a great season, and now it is open for dissection to consider the many reasons why. And we'll have plenty of time to stew in our juices as we enter a season with a post-season ban and 40 minutes of WTF. In other words: UConn, The Missing Years.
