Yeah but you still have to look at the reality on the ground, as it were. His current contract expires in 2014. He may not have much (or any) support from the AD's office. For him to get to a point where he can stay "for as long as he wants or until he's senile" he will need to sign an extension. And who knows if one will be offered?

Jim Calhoun will coach basketball at UConn as long as he pleases; end of discussion.

Err, the AD was just hired. He's still saying hello. So, this AD s going to push Calhoun out?!! How quickly would this new AD be out on his ear if he tried that?

Let's be realistic here.

"to a program that may be spiraling toward oblivion this year"

Thamel must do his research on syracusefan.com.

Well, he has plenty of support from the President's office, and that's who the new AD reports to.

he doesn't have to do any pushing. All he has to do is not renew the contract. Can be easily done and (for all I know) easily justified. I'm not saying I would agree with it at all, I just think his longterm future as a Huskies coach is maybe not as ironclad as some of you would think. Just my opinion.

Well, it would be very interesting to see what would happen if a new AD (and he will still be a new AD in 2014) would attempt to non-renew Jim Calhoun. I would hope that he is smarter than that and I expect that Herbst is smarter than that.

He's right, the program MAY be spiraling toward oblivion. Of course so may Syracuse/Duke/UNC/UK/KU/etc.

Thamel MAY also be an intelligent person. Thamel MAY also be someone who would be fun to get a beer with. Thamel MAY also be 6'6 250 (go get him TampaBill).

Not renewing the contract = pushing Calhoun out.

This is totally ludicrous. Or ludacris depending on how old you are.
