Sounds MORE than resonable to me. I hope she does well.
What WAS surprising: "NYT says average salary for WCBB Head coach $98,000." WOW!

The only thing I'd like to know about the NYT figure is, is that a D-1 average salary, or does it include D-2, etc.?

The Statesman article is incorrect. According to the actual NYT article the $98K figure is the average salary for a women's coach in any sport.

Here is a LINK to the NYT article (which contains several Geno & JC references)

From the same NYT article -

"For Division I basketball, the median salary for coaches of a men’s team in 2010 was $329,300, nearly twice that of coaches for women’s teams, who had a median of $171,600."

If they are giving her middle-of-the-conference pay, are they willing to accept commensurate results?

Fairly certain the answer is no. She was making 125K at UNT, so they almost quintupled her salary. If she gets results similar to Sherri, Gary, or Kim, she will be paid accordingly. If she fails, at some point she'll either step down or be forced out, and Texas might decide to go the "big name, big bucks" route again.

The two sports, at least at the higher levels of competition, that generate meaningful revenue returns to a program are football and men's basketball. It is not shocking that those coaches generally make a good deal more than other coaches. For the odd program here and there that is an aberration within a sport, like UConn's women BB, I'd guess that Geno's salary easily trumps the salary of a large number of DI men's hoops coaches. Lot's of variables in these comparisons - success of program,
size of athletic budget etc. Almost 600 grand will keep a body going for a while.
