If he doesn't come to Uconn, I couldn't think of a better place for him to end up than VCU. always fun to root for them
The fact Larrier hasn't committed yet shows how strong his unofficial to UConn went.
VCU has been in the drivers seat, according to all recruiting analysts, for months and months. Him not committing on the trip was a huge boost for UConn.
Still feel VCUs trip needed a negative or at least a mediocre for him not to go there but Ollie made up a ton of ground with that unofficial. I'd put it at 60/40 Larrier ends up playing the gimmick that is havok. Furthest thing from the Cuse zone and yet darn close in prepping one for the NBA, and we all know how much a joke the Cuse zone is in prepping a kid.
Shaka is a good college coach, though overrated based on his final four run, but an NBA team would be suicidal to even contemplate hiring him. Watching both Ollie and Shaka coach last year, it's pretty obvious who would make a better NBA coach out the gate. Ollie's coaching of matchups and spacing is much better. Shaka will get lots of offers from other colleges but I'd bet Ollie gets serious NBA consideration first. Not saying either will ever leave but that would be my bet.
Gimmick??? In a 2 day turn around on the college level (NCAA Tournament) Havoc is the hardest thing to prepare for if the right personnel can be rolled out (like Briante Webber and his posse this year). So it is a gimmick until you are hit with it on a short turn around (or the personnel goes 10 deep and hits you in waves like this VCU team will do). You are under selling Shaka Smart to think he can't reinvent himself into a more traditional style in the future if need be. Havoc works for VCU and that makes their brand the most exciting in college hoops (similar to our dream season press).
The VCU "system" plays well into the talent level recruited. To take that to a Final4 is a big accomplishment not a gimmick.
Ollie is still somewhat unproven on the college level and this year will be telling. Kevin Ollie knows "the league" inside out and ultimately will be the preeminent coach delivering players to the NBA. Larrier needs to seriously consider UConn and I think he is.
It's a gimmick.
The dream season press was also a gimmick.
Calhoun changed his defensive philosophy and that is probably why he is in the HOF, so perhaps Shaka could also change his philosophy.
I was shocked at 99's statement that UConn isn't totally out. Given the tweets coming from the coach and player. This to me looks like a much bigger longshot than Abu.
has he said when he plans on making his decision?I've been told its closer than people think between UConn and VCU. That's one of the main reasons why he didn't commit on his official at VCU.
has he said when he plans on making his decision?
Wait, didn't Pitino just win a championship with that gimmick five months ago?
First, I highly doubt Shaka is taking his full-court pressing style to the NBA. Hasn't worked out too well in the past.
Secondly, UCLA has only been a "dumpster fire" lately because Ben Howland made it so. There are only so many college jobs better than UCLA and I'm not sure any of them will be looking for a new coach anytime soon.
When the rumors of the announcement are all coming out of the VCU camp, I'd say the ship has sailed. Good Luck to TL.
