Maryland did the same thing in 2012.

More than six months after Maryland revealed plans to eliminate eight athletic programs as a way to overcome a multimillion-dollar deficit, Athletic Director Kevin Anderson officially announced Monday that seven of those teams were unable to raise the necessary money for survival.

Men’s and women’s swimming; men’s tennis; women’s water polo; acrobatics and tumbling (formerly known as competitive cheer); and two men’s track programs, cross-country and indoor track and field, were eliminated. Those programs did not show enough progress toward raising eight years’ worth of total costs by June 30.

Someday, we really do have to ask ourselves WTF what we are doing allowing CFB to be the SOLE driver of intercollegiate athletics.

True - However, the P-5 money is derived from football so it is a necessary evil for any institution that needs the $ to support non-revenue sports.

Temple is a "canary in the coal mine" regarding the horrid AAC. It serves as an illustration of what will eventually befall all AAC members because of woeful TV revenue.
UConn will be supported for a few years by the state, but eventually it will suffer budget shortfalls that won't be covered. I know this should probably be on the CR board because of the subject matter, but it is relevant on the football board too. More than ever - get us out of the AAC!

Is this just a BS papering the record ploy by Temple before they leave us for the B1G?

Unlike schools like Temple, UConn has revenues in more sports than men's basketball and football. UConn has revenues in soccer, women's basketball, and men's hockey in the future. And, UConn's men's and women's hockey programs will have minimal travel costs as Hockey East is a New England conference (+ND). Plus, women's lacrosse and field hockey still play in the Big East against relatively local schools.

UConn will be fine.

Title 9 does add to the scholarship demands created by 85 football scholarships, so in that sense both football and t9 contribute to the big budgets.

But that's minor compared to the expenses of football. When UB jumped into D1 several years ago, its budget increased exponentially, from $10m to current $30m. Some schools can shoulder a $9m loss. But not a $28m loss.

Ramping up football is a huge cost driver.

Nick Giaquinto transfered to UConn when Bridgeport shut down it's football program back in the mid seventies.

Most of those sports are WTF sports. Men's Gymnastics, Crew. Who cares. Sucks that they are cutting baseball. Surprised Cosby couldn't save track and field.
Crew created college athletics.
