Tell me about the NEW Big Ten

Did anyone watch the Md. vs Michigan game?
If so, why did Sellars only play 19 minutes and why did Poffenbarger not start and only play 9 minutes?
Injuries, illnesses? Benched?

For Sellers, it seemed to be a coaching decision. She was struggling defensively and also her knee was limiting her offense. Frese mentioned that she felt Sellers was losing her poise and composure.

Poffenbarger missed the game against OSU with an injury, so may still be getting back from that.

Kiki and Juju was too much for Michigan in the end. Kiki, if she declares for the WNBA, is going to be a nice addition to any team at the professional level. For Michigan, it is going to be interesting to see what develops over the NCAA tournament and going forward.

I knew they would be good. I just was not expecting this type of dominating performance by both programs. But I love it! This makes other programs step up their recruiting approach and change their coaching styles a little.

I think it was a transitional year for a lot of the old Big Ten teams. I expect the conference to be more competitive with some of the younger players getting another year in their respective systems. Michigan comes to my mind as a potential contender for the next few years.

They were competitive--with each other (and were either mediocre or just a step above).

They were largely non-competitive with the LA newcomers--and that's a problem.

To close the gap, Big Ten legacy teams are going to have to win recruiting battles for elite prospects with those LA teams on a more consistent basis. I have a hard time seeing that happen consistently, though, given where many of the Big Ten legacy teams play (Midwest). The two LA schools should still be able to dominate the elite talent coming from the West Coast. Meanwhile, UCLA is pulling multiple McDonalds All-Americans from the East Coast!

The struggles that Iowa and Indiana have to recruit elite high school talent demonstrate how little home attendance matters to recruits, compared to location, school etc. Both fan bases are somewhat mystified that attendance and home environment don’t lead to more elite recruiting victories. Both teams will need some portal help to try to return to NCAA hosting level next year.

Other than Michigan and Minnesota, not sure any of the other legacy BIG teams from 3rd-13th place this year look to be significantly improved next year based on existing returning rosters and signed recruits. Portal season will be huge.
 
CBS' graphic just showed Emily Bessoir in the starting lineup for UCLA. Uh...I don't think so! Didn't she medically retire? :oops:

Can confirm. If attendnence was a big driver Iowa State would do more than go to a Sweet Sixteen once every eight years or so. Great attendance and fan base following but only a good, not great, program.

My eyes bugged out at that. Gabriela Jaquez was the misidentified player. There were even a couple of times in the game where Jaquez was confused with Dugalic during game play... when Dugalic was on the bench.

In the final, though, one of the announcers kept calling Southern California "South Carolina" with no correction ever offered. I had thought that the unfamiliarity was odd during the B1G broadcasts of the earlier games, when an announcer stated that all of UCLA's starters were on the bench in the fourth quarter, when two starters (Jones and Dugalic) were in the game. They even cut to a number of players on the bench, including three starters, Barker, and Gardiner, and called them "the starters" then fumbled for a second as the announcer seemed to realize that a couple pictured came off the bench. Maybe she realized that Barker was 6th player of the year...?

In any case, you can tell when people didn't do their homework. In women's basketball, that seems to happen waayyy too much.

I could see a bunch of next year's sophs taking a big step forward. They showed some flashes this year. There were at least 4 that were part of the rotation this year as Fr. Then of course they still have Stuelke and McCabe. Will be the second year in a row as a rebuild, but there are some pieces to work with.


Add O'Grady to the list of significant losses though.
