Perhaps the most incompetent referee in the history of college basketball just made one of the worst calls I've ever seen at the end of the USF/UCF game.

It was actually a really fun game to watch and about to go into a 2nd OT when Ted Valentine decided he needed to put his mark on the game. Called an absolutely horrendous foul on UCF behind the half court line with 0.8 seconds left in OT. Such a joke of a call. If anything, Sykes on UCF got fouled right before the foul Valentine called. Just a brutal way to end the game.

Valentine better not be working the UConn/Cincy game tomorrow...

(Reminded me a bit of the UConn/Cincy game a few years back when Gavin had a terrible foul called on him by John Cahill with a couple of seconds left.)

Only Stuart can make Valentine look good. How do these bozos keep working? Is it that corrupt?

John Cahill has retired, correct??

Valentine is truly awful. How these guys get it wrong so often is amazing.

Yes, and there's not a consistent feeder pool of talent to replace them. The older refs always justify their existence by being the right place, knowing their zones and not worrying about making the right call.

Their all about process and not about results.

No worse call of Cahill's than the phantom timeout called by Boeheim, granted by Cahill about 5 seconds late, after Scoop Jardine had (yet again) driven the lane out of control, with 30 seconds left in a tie game at Syracuse. Killed the whole season.

Eh, a lot of things killed that season. That sure didn't help, though

I reffed a 8th grade boys travel game last week in a pinch for our towns P&R director. I'll be honest it was a lot more difficult than I would have expected. Once you get past the parents who think every time their kid gets touched it's a foul, actually getting the right call and being able to see/do multiple things at once was tough.

Of course I was thinking about our boy Stuart the whole time, and of course I'm not a "professional" like him, but I can absolutely see how an ego could really affect a ref. I heard everything without holding a grudge because the kids are in 8th grade, but if had a 20 year old mouthing off (or a coach) I'm not sure I could be unbiased the next time that kid/coach was treading the line in a questionable call.
