Tech-challenged old fart

needs help in uploading digital photos to laptop that crashed recently and lost all photo files as well as the ability to accept new ones. I used to insert camera photo card into a Dynex stick, insert into laptop port, and automatically upload. Computer no longer recognizes stick and I'm totally stumped. Need advice that an old guy can understand. Thanks.
