In the past two weeks, I've been reading about teams opting out of the rest of the regular season due to Covid concerns. And for the most part, they have one thing in common: They're bad teams without hope of post-season qualification or success.
What message does this send to young athletes? "Ok, we suck, let's take the ball and go home?" It also does a disservice to their opponents. I've even read a few school press releases where the schools don't even explain the reason. They just say they decided to opt out due to Covid concerns. Don't they owe their students, alumni and fans a real explanation?
