Not sure if he was joking, I mean, hopefully. But, in case not: Gabby was a national class high jumper and is now a very good basketball player. Not the best player in the country last year but still, very good. You could make the argument that she could've been in the discussion for NPOY.
Katie Ledecky was the best swimmer in the world last year. By a LOT, on a historic level. Like Secretariat winning the Belmont better. Like UConn beating Louisville in a national title game better. And Ledecky dominated at so many distances -- the 200, the 400, and the 800. Plus, she's the world champion and world-record holder at the 1,500, which they don't have for women at the Olympics yet.
Even if you want to say that Gabby is more athletic than Katie Ledecky? Sorry, no.
