There goes Phoenix's season. Might we see a reincarnated reincarnation of Charde Houston?

Significant loss for the Mercury, especially when you factor in that Penny Taylor is not playing for them this year. They're definitely in the Griner/Diggins/EDD draft lottery now.

It would also be a big loss for Geno if she's unable to play in the Olympics? Will Team USA able to pick up another player? If so, I suspect it would be Cappie, but wouldn't mind if it wasn't Douglas.

Can you imagine DT and BG on the same team! I might consider moving to Phoenix for the summer. Wow, there is a phrase I thought I would NEVER have said.

Was Douglas in the pool of players? Can/would you pick a player that wasn't in the pool?

Let's hope she gets well soon. That would be a big loss for the Olympic team a horrible break for DT.

I don't think that I would put Diggins in the same category as Griner or EDD. She is not nearly the player at her position, as BG and EDD are at theirs. JMO, but little Miss 'tude will be in for a big awakening at the next level...
And most importantly, get well, Dee...

It looks like her recent practical joke on her teammates was, in a way, eerily prophetic...!! At least until August, she be will playing for the US on the Olympic team.... but not for the Mercury. Let's just pray she heals up well in advance of the Games....!!

Agreed. BG and EDD are the clear top choices next year.

Wonder if she is playing it safe in order to play in London? Would be smart of her, IMO.

I would have to wonder how the Phoenix executives would feel about a player not fulfilling their contractual obligations in order to be ready to play in the Olympics. Maybe this is something that would be endorsed for the good of the USA team. I would hope that this is not the case as it would jeopardize her professional integrity unless the Mercury were to support such a decision.

Well, I could see her not pushing to get back earlier in order to play in the Olympics. And I could also see the Mercury being OK with that and leveraging this season against having a very high-profile player of theirs do well on a large stage internationally. Also, with PT out, they might be chalking this season up to "lost" and hoping for a high draft pick.

While I agree that Griner and EDD are in another category, I think Diggins will find success in the pros. Obviously, there will be an adjustment period like for all rookies. However, I don't see her getting overwhelmed at the next level.

With PT out and the Mercury having a grim playoff outlook DT may be the only thing that puts butts in the seats this year. However, if Phoenix has a bad year and were to get BG next year, butts would be all over the place. Losing may be winning in the long run. Say it like Charlie Seen: winning.

My $.02... I think Charde has a big year. I think the Olympics come halfway thru the season more or less is that correct? so the team could come on strong the 2nd half of the year. still, there's a pretty good chance Phx lands in the bottom two in the West. BUT no guarantee they will get the 1st or 2nd pick. it's a lottery. just ask LA how that worked out for them - the probably had the worst shot last year but got the 1st pick and landed Nneka, which probably makes them the #2 team in the West as a result.

i think Diana will come back when she's physically able to. i don't think she'd take time off from Phx just so she can be healthy for the Olympics.

If she can't play, I wonder who they take? I think it should be Cappie too, regardless of her history with the US National team. but she's a shoot first player. Diana is a pass first player. they may want someone less selfish. Katie Douglas would be another good choice.

I am amazed that more Women's players don't break down with their crazy schedules. At least a fair number are now taking the fall off before reporting to European teams in January. And Diana having the doping snafu was probably a blessing in disguise as she ended up with 6 months away from organized team activities - that was I think her first break since college. She had been basically playing 12 months a year for 6 years.

Full Court is saying that DT is listed as day to day and her playing in the Olympics should not be impacted. Don't understand how you can be out indefinitely and listed as day to day.

I believe (possibly incorrectly) that there is some date, after which,
the olympic roster is frozen. If you lose a player to injury or other
cause after that date, you can't add a replacement and have to
play with a reduced roster.

I don't know what that date is, but I'm under the impression that
it occurs well before the olympics. Can anyone set me straight on
this?

Not sure, but I think there is a deadline. My guess is that it is a couple of weeks to a month out.

It is a day to day type of injury therefore there is no clear timetable for a return thus she is out indefinitely. Pretty much the dictionary definition of indefinitely.

Diana is a dedicated basketball player. When she is ready to play (allow for medical clearance), she will play. She will play her heart out for Phoenix and she will play her heart out for the USA.

Phoenix would be stupid to angle for last place in the hope or expectation that Griner will fall into their lap. As has been pointed out, the lottery of several low draft picking teams removes all guarantees.

Let's just hope that everyone on the US Olympic team is healthy, especially including Diana. She needs a little more hardware.
