Tarris Reed not being utilized

Back in the Adama days, we could get the ball to him in the post and he’d score almost at will to prevent the other team from going on a run. I’d like to see Tarris in that role and I think he can do it although it took AS some time to develop into that so we’ll need to be patient I guess.

If Tarris can continue to shoot 68% when he's being actively fed the ball and the defense focuses on him, then it would be a good move. I'm sure they are testing this in practice.

I posted this in the game thread last night but why aren't we getting the ball to Tarris Reed? He's totally unstoppable and an automatic bucket on the block.

This doesn't seem to be a problem of our guys not being able to make an entry pass like we saw years ago at UConn. It seems to be an intent problem, like it's not even a part of the plan to try and dump it into him a bunch. I don't get it. I know our offense is really good but having him feasting down low would further unlock things for Solo, AK, etc. and it's an automatic two points for Tarris.

On a team that has trouble with all our perimeter players getting to the rim outside of Hass and Liam who is now hurt it makes no sense we aren't riding our Hoss. It was really frustrating we had three cracks at winning the game on our final possession and we never got it into Reed.

I'm not sure either and it wouldn't be my choice. But it seems like Samson is getting a couple of easy baskets at the start of every game, so I've given up on that changing

It seems to me that scheming around Reed is low hanging fruit right now. The development of the offensive flow with the new ball handlers should be the priority and will be key to our depth later in the season....and then we can truly unleash Tarris and give teams something new to prepare for in March and wear teams down.

I agree with everything said here. While Samson's play has gotten better, I think Reed has shown streaks where he has been unstoppable. I am baffled by Hurley decisions at the 5.

Two observations I made here earlier this season. I know Liam has something to say about it, but I believed as early as our first 5 games that Reed was our best player and would eventually be unstoppable down low. There’s no way he wasn’t getting the ball the other night with the game on the line. Was super surprised he didn’t get it. Also I have never been a fan of Aidan at St Mary’s, but the one thing he has done well when he does it, is drive to the hoop. If you haven’t noticed it, pay attention when he does it, he gets there pretty easily and then hasn’t finished which has me confused because he hasn’t even been out of control, he actually has looked good doing it and I know he can knock down shots so he has me optimistic that he can at least be Joey C good for us and I’ll take that.

I preach patience, even though it's a bit obvious. Hurley is paragon of old school when it comes to loyalty, and familial tradition and culture of pecking order. Also there was a succession promise made from him to convince Samson to stay over after Sanogo and Clingan.

Reed is a new kid on the block. If there is any indication from Dan's submission to the idea of Ross experiment being over, Reed is next in line to start in place of Samson.

Give it time....

Read the book about Hurley’s dad. This was what happened. Even if the new guy was better he never took the place of the incumbent unless the incumbent did something stupid off court or did not take his academics seriously. Hurley had to inherit some of that thinking. He is not just coaching this years team he also has to consider creating a program that adheres to certain pillars.

That's why he needs more minutes. He is developing into that guy, so lets develop him quick. The season is young. Reed, Stewart and Nowell have time to blossom if they play a lot. Nowell is more of a hope in my mind since he's so young, but I think Reed and Stewart are a sure thing if we play our cards right.

I love Hurley as a coach, but continuing to start a guy at Center who averages under 3 rebounds a game is stubbornness bordering on insanity, especially when our other center averages about 2.5 as many rebounds per minute.

Also, this could lead to the other teams bigs to get into foul trouble, plus he is good at the line. Reed is a force down low. I agree, use him more.

I've seen that also, and I don't think the regular offense is very good at isolating Reed. The motion offense continues to run, and there continues to be traffic around him as it does so. There has to be a "fist" or a "five up" play, or some other signal, that tells the other players to keep their defender away so that he can get his position. By the way, I'd also like to see Stewart get some post-up looks. He's strong and has shown lately he sees the court, can get kickout 3's.

He’s also very good a controlling the opening tip. But I would play Tarris more minutes.

It may sound crazy some, but I think Samson Johnson starts because he does trust Reed more. I think he hopes to get what he can from Johnson and it lets Reed understand how aggressive he can be coming in.
Aside from their shooting, Cam and T-Newt were really good at passing the ball into the post. The best on this team is Karaban, and I think Hurley would love to have him with the Hi-Low passing the ball down, but I wonder if his slump is affecting this as well. It's going to be a quick double team, and I think most of the time Hurley would love that with Alex taking a step back to the 3 point line after the pass giving Reed a pass back option.
As good as Diarra is driving and dishing sometime, he is less than average at feeding the post.

Both him and Jaylin were needed
much earlier in the 2nd half. By the time they came back we were a bit disjointed.

just like I said in the other thread, his usage of Ross and Samson is because he values "stops" & rotations alot more than made baskets. It's old school coach bball stubbornness. This roster will not ultimately be successful trying to be a lockdown overplay no help man to man team. Too slow at too many positions.

Mahaney went from all -league to borderline unplayable at times bc of our defensive scheme, trying to fit players into what they cant do. It's like having a squad of Johnnie Selvie's and trying to run a 3 pt only offense. It doesnt fit. Who is our lockdown defender? Outside of Hass, who is undersized, I dont think we have a good defender this year. We aren't gonna wear down opponents with our defensive pressure, with Clingan to clear things out. Instead we give up layups to bad big east teams like its our job at times bc of not adapting and overplaying with minus athletes, as we play to our opponents level. Pride goes before the fall.

Ross getting minutes over Stew is him not seeing what is. I am among biggest Samson supporters, but Reed is a major post up option but not being consistently utilized because Dan wants to deny opposing center past the three pt line and do his high hedge.

This is well said in terms of what we see. Coach has proven he knows what he’s doing in winning back to back titles, so I won’t say much and will hope he figures things out. However, the above is a harsh and seemingly accurate assessment.

He's a great coach, and his "better behavior" since Maui shows he can adjust and change. In my opinion, It takes him a bit longg to see what is, and not just what he wants it to be.
