Tarris Reed Jr Out vs Arizona

Not impressed AT ALL with men's hoop team. What's going on at Uconn during past and present preseasons with all these ankle injuries (Clingan '23, Castle '23, McNeeley '24 and Reed & Mullins '25)? UConn can't afford to have key players on the sidelines till early Dec each and every year. That's when they play high ranking P4 teams. Need them then, not for Butler, DePaul, or Seton Hall. Don't really value wins over those mediocre teams.
Yep this is a trend, but UConn can do no wrong in some people's eyes.

Wait, before the game and after the game the Courant articles said:

Both Reed and Mullins are considered game-to-game.

Now it's a high ankle sprain? Wtf is going on? I'm pretty sure he had sneakers on during the game tonight.
And another high ankle sprain for one of our guys. This is getting ridiculous

Their big hasn't been the difference maker so far, but that's a lot of vertical. I'm gonna be really curious as to the creativity Hurley is gonna have to pull out for this one. How many minutes can Reibe even go? You got to wonder if the Turk gets some run in this one.
No I don't.
Yeah love when the woodwork says “next man up” as if it’s a movie.
You're setting us up for heartbreak when the network snatches you away from us, right?
He couldn't drop 800mg of Motrin, ice/heat and limp out 15 minutes?
Whatever you're imitating is embarrassed by the sincere flattery.
@RuffRuff will tell you what's going on.
Please, no.

He fell on his back not his ankle
I was at the game and I did not like that foul Where he got his “legs taken out” from him on way to basket. If those are not flagrant fouls, they should be IMO. Especially when they come from the back, they are intentional and they “go low” versus going for the ball.

I terms of blaming loss on his absence, in the words of the great Hall and Oates. “I can’t for that, no, no can do!”

We have to be next man up and no excuses.

Love what Reibe did tonight. He honestly looks like the next Kalbrenner and yes, I am fine with that! What we all saw with his play tonight - the glimpse of what coming w/ him takes away my disappointment w/ the loss.

Normally these injuries would be less impactful because it is November. It becomes important, however, because Nov/Dec are the only months available for us to play top P4 competition. After that we are consigned to play a weak BE schedule until March. As of now, there are only 2 BE teams in the top 25. We have to make our mark now. This is just another reason of why we need out of the BE.

Hope Benedict is on it...

People like to say "no excuses" and stuff like that because it sounds stoic or whatever, but in reality, if a team is missing one of its best players because of an injury, it's a break for the other team. I don't understand the mentality of pretending every player has equal ability, and that injuries don't impact a team's performance. What is UConn supposed to do now, pretend that they don't have answers down low and go out and recruit a center? Gee, I hear Tarris Reed will be available soon. Maybe we should try to sign him.

See Houston in March....

Peat beat us silly...we had no answer.

Missed 9 FTs... Make 5 of those they win.

Also shot 40% from the floor... Shoot 45%, they win.

Actually not bad given that Reed was out.

Really a sad loss.
But we did shoot 45%

It sounds like they’ll be out against ranked teams . At least we get to have them back healthy when we play a loaded and tough big east. How exciting!

Turns out we're not that deep at the center position.

I really hope Reed Jr. is not one of those guys who has oodles of talent but is made of glass.

List the number of teams who have proven depth at center when their starter is out.
Who has a #2 and #3 who can give 40 minutes of quality play at the 5 spot?

Zero - maybe Florida and that’s only because they start 3 of them.

Unfortunate - Reed is the most important player on this team. We have answers for anyone else missing. We needed our 4s to pick up the slack on the boards to help our frosh 5 out and they didn’t. Reed definitely is not soft, it’s just the way this was handled was off the wall.

I don't know why you keep insisting this. I know you arbitrarily decided this year's OOC schedule was the most important 6 games of all time but there was zero reason to risk losing Reed for months to rush him back yesterday. Reed was injured over the weekend, it's not like this was a shock to the staff, they had all week to prepare for him not playing and then he didn't play

Unfortunately, I think this Reed injury is going to nag him all season and he could miss games off and on all season. Reibe is going to have to be ready to shine. Trial by fire.

The whole concept of TEAM is that you have these players you recruited for introduction into the game as required,

Every team has injuries.
Every team has players that can’t be there when expected.
It is your job as a coach to recruit best available back ups.

Every team can sulk after loss because they had an injury. But at end of day, it’s just an excuse.

One or two players are hurt / unavailable welcome to College D1 basketball - not uncommon. Think BYU,

So for me, any attempt to say “we would’ve, could’ve” is for the birds.

We lost.
They won.

We learned some important lessons.

We live to play another day.

But we know that BYU not having two key players was a break for us. It's not like we're going to pretend those guys wouldn't have made a difference. It's tough to recruit amazing backups when there's a portal and guys want to go where they're guaranteed the most playing time.

Sometimes backups can step up and cover for the missing player adequately, but if you lose your best player or second-best player, a backup isn't going to have the same skill level.

The injury situation with this team has become maddening. It's like we can't catch a break. In football you accept it as part of the game, with hoops, not so much. It would be nice to be able to see what a whole team looks like.

they're 2 deep at center, which is better than the vast majority of high major/power conference teams. I'd be shocked if there are more than a handful of teams that have a 3rd center just chilling on their bench not playing that would look that much better than what we saw from Koroma last night/this season

exactly, not a chance in hell. If that 3rd string center was such a talented and skilled player they would go somewhere they can start most likely or at minimum be the first center off the bench and play at minimum 15-20 minutes a game. They would never waste a year sitting on the bench for rare spot minutes.

To be honest, I didn’t consider it a “break” when we played BYU - I am consistent in this belief.

Switching to football, look at what happened to Syracuse when QB went down - they over there are sulking.

If Joe F goes down for injury - hopefully not - but if he did we’ve got Evers to step right in. Now excuses, play the game.

All of this shouldn’t be taken to seriously as this is just “fan talk” there is not right/wrong belief.

But for me I don’t like the whole concept of alluding to what could have been - you’ve got to be ready as a team for injuries - cut/dry.

Hurley sounded frustrated with it in the post game press conference.

Reed apparently hurt his ankle near the end of Saturday's win over BYU in Boston. Still, Hurley said he didn't think much of it as Reed was walking around postgame without a boot, and assumed he would be available on Wednesday.

"Medical got a look at him," Hurley said, "and he's game-to-game at this point."

Reed had missed UConn's two exhibition games and its season-opener with a hamstring issue. Both he and Mullins are now out with ankle injuries, and Hurley seems a bit perplexed by it all.

“I really believe we’re the Basketball Capital of the World,” Hurley said. “I also think we’re becoming the ankle sprain capital of the world and the muscle pull capital of the world. We’ve got to get this team on the court. We’ve got to get all our weapons on the court.”
