you tend to get more of those calls if you flop, but flopping is for drama class.
I personally don't care if we take charges or not, I like JC's philosophy about defending the shot then position yourself for the rebound

Charges are a must in a good defensive team, not flopping mind you, but taking a charge. People like Kelly od Duke, Martin and Cooley of ND, Fab of the Cuse - they should be called for a foul EVERYTIME the charge is not called - you flop, you lose. If it's a good defensive play I'm all for it.....if the guys lands from a shot or a pass and you hardly get any of his momentum and you flop -whistle and a foul......hate those guys....KELLY is by far the worst - If I were a refereee and he looked at me after a non call I'd just stay "stand the *k up and play basketball once in a while ya pu**y"........okay so maybe I wouldn't...........

I actually think the lack of charge calls is a pretty significant indicator of poor defense. In the least they should come naturally by playing good help defense and strong man rotation. Otherwise it seems more like we are doing a lot of chasing from behind with no help and relying on blocks, which unless you have an extremely dominantly guy that just intimidates everyone in the lane, is an overrated stat.

It's pretty clear that Uconn big men are taught to challenge people at the rim rather than step in for charges. On the one hand, you can argue that this is flawed strategically since it's so easy to get charge calls these days.
On the other hand, I would argue that all these charges hurt the game more than anything else. It's officiated terribly and it rewards teams for getting beat off the dribble and just having someone slide over at the last minute and get in the way. The offensive player has just as much of a right to the space near the basket as the defender does, yet nearly every time there's a collision the call goes against the offense. The circle didn't help matters either - I'm convinced that now all the official does is look at the defenders feet and as long as he's outside the circle, it's a charge.
I'm actually proud of the fact that Uconn has managed to be a solid or better defensive team year after year without resorting to flopping all over the place like other teams do.

I've been ranting about this and was posting about this around the cuse game. Honestly this isn't even funny and seems like bad coaching. To get your first charge this late in the season is amazing they've should've been taking charges all year rather then just letting players going right to the rack. This is something we need to work on during the off season. I root for Michigan (hoops only) and they take at least 3 charges a game.
I don't care if they step in front, and force the guy to pass or dribble away from the basket, or challenge the shot, or foul, or take the charge, but do something and stop letting the guys go down the lane unchallenged for layups.

I just got off the phone with the 2011 National Champion Connecticut Husky team, which is one of the best defensive teams that has ever graced an NCAA court, as proven statistically by their unrelenting, stifling defense, and they think you're full of crap.

Jim Calhoun's teams don't flop and they don't try to take charges. What they do is defend the shot and rebound. Hence, they are one of the national leaders in defensive FG% and rebounding margin just about each and every year. They have amazing success on the courts, and many of them get to play at the next level. They do all this without practicing the art of flopping, which is essentially cheating.

that sums up my feelings on Ryan Kelly and flopping in general, well put
It seems like some people here can't separate the acts of taking a charge and flopping. Taking a charge happens when you decide to stay between you man and the basket, and the other guy decides he is going to the rim no matter what. It's good defense, and it takes guts because it isn't fun slamming your back onto a hardwood floor.
Too many times Uconn players are content with stepping to the side and taking a swipe at the ball. Is that manly because they aren't "flopping"? Some of these guys need to man-up and take a legit charge. The way some of the opposing guards slice through the defense unopposed is horrid.

Since Calhoun's arrival, UConn has consistently been one of the the best defensive teams in the country, and there is very little doubt that the overall best-defensive-team-over-a-decade-and-a-half award belongs to us.

Roscoe attempted (though perhaps a bit late) to take an actual charge. Kemba was very good at beating his man to the spot and taking the charge also. What Fab Melo/Ryan Kelley and the Plumlees do is flopping, throwing yourself to the ground when someone breathes on you. Both get called as charges by the refs. I love the first and can't stand the second.
