Tailgating - TV

So for a few years I've been debating adding a television to my tailgating setup. I was hoping to gather some information from fellow Boneyarders. What's the general setup/costs associated with addition? Any information provided would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A buddy in another state uses this. He has no complaints!

There are other options out there - I think Direct TV has one as well.

I'm waiting for home cable to tablet. It's almost available now. Maybe by next season.

Generator w/inverter

Should be able to get by with a power inverter if u are willing to keep the car running. Just may simplify a little bit than having a noisy generator

I have a 2000w honda quiet generator. Beats the heck out of sucking on car exhaust. Cost about 1k.

If I am running a blender, I'll use my vehicle's built in inverter. But, for TV you really should have a genny.

One of my tailgate partners has one. He bought an older Direct tv reciever (used his card from home) on ebay, mounted his old dish on a rig made up of 2x4's with a 3/4" plywood base...the. would spend a little while getting it aimed right. Once he did it a few times he got it pretty quick..then he bought an inexpensive Vizio 32" from Costco. We used it to watch Gameday.

I was debating a setup involving a slingbox at home... But that would depend on reliable cell data speeds at the Rent. Gets iffy as more people pack in.

I will 100% vouch for the reliability and quietness of Honda generators. I have seen them perform in conditions that exceed anything a tailgate environment can bring up.

I have a 2000w Honda and agree with Chin. Quiet and have never had an issue getting it started.

Later in the season, when temps drop, I turn to a 12500 Generac I use for the house during power outages. Loud as but powers any heaters, TV's, ovens, fridges, lights we've thrown at it.

Seems like a lot of work to watch Gameday. Unless UConn starts playing a lot more late Saturday games I struggle to see the utility.

Is car exhaust worse than generator exhaust. Granted a generator is tw better way to go how do u hold a conversation with one in the vicinity

You put the generator in front of the vehicle vs. the exhaust pipe right next to your tailgate. The exhaust from a car engine is also greater than that of a carry on suitcase sized generator.

Anyone willing to go all out can google tailgate in a box and see what those guys can do for the right amount of $$.

Dish = no SNY = no dice.

Every year, I promise to do this, and i never follow through. The power is the toughie...

I'm not sure about how many apps can output to hdmi, but I use my ipad for lots of tv watching away from home. iPhones are capable of this as well. You'd have to research what apps will output, but if you already have either of those devices and a large enough data plan, could be an effective way to go.

You can get ABC, CBS, FOX, etc. in HD with just an $10 antenna. If you get 4g out there, you can probably hook up a tablet or phone to access WatchESPN. That takes care of the programming. Next is to figure out power. If you have a generator, great. If not, look into buying a deep cycle marine battery, and running the TV and maybe a fan from a $40 500 watt inverter. Total setup cost = $~150.
