Was checking the weather and looks like there might be a big storm coming in tue-Sat...thinking about coming out for a long weekend.

Haven't been in tahoe in over 20 years...Have stayed in S. Lake Tahoe and Incline Village past trips. Is S. Lake Tahoe still the place to stay? Or are we better off staying on the mtn to be sure we don't get snowed in and unable to reach the mtn?? I've only been there for spring conditions.

Also..is there a fav local forecast you like? This will be a miles trip, so I can still cancel if the storm peters out

Any advice/suggestions are appreciated

Thx in advance.

Until CAHusky responds, I'll drop my $.02. I've stayed AirBnB in South Lake Tahoe and also on the mountain at the Village at Squaw before I had free lodging (at my son's place in North Lake Tahoe). I personally like the north and its an easy ride from Reno. I would check to see if there's any condos or houses that fit your bill on AirBnB or VRBO. I personally like Squaw/Alpine the best for above treeline skiing but there's a lot of people who like Heavenly or Kirkwood best. If you can't get close to the mountain, Truckee isn't that far a drive to the northern areas like Northstar or Squaw and should be cheaper. If budget's not a problem the RItz at Northstar is very nice!

As to a weather app, my son turned me onto Dark Sky - which is supposedly hyper local weather.

I go to Tahoe almost every year and always stay in Incline Village or close by it, usually in an AirBnB, and would definitely recommend it over south shore. I usually ski at Mt. Rose, but check out the Liftopia app for pretty good info on conditions, how much snow, what's open, what's closed, etc. App also sometimes has deals on lift tickets.

I'm a north shore guy so I would definitely recommend it over the south shore. Tahoe City, Truckee, Squaw Valley, Northstar and Incline are all great areas with Squaw & Northsar having a ton of lodging on or right next to the slopes.

That said, if you're looking for crazy night life, partying and gambling the south shore is the place for you. I'm not clear on which dates your coming to visit but if its next next weekend (January 19) you should be in good shape. Some decent snow totals expected this week and then clearing up next Saturday. Should be stellar conditions. My favorite ski forecast website is: Tahoe Daily Snow | Snow Forecast & Ski Report. For North Tahoe info this is the site: Plan the perfect Lake Tahoe vacation | Go Tahoe North

I'm not sure where someone found 5 nights at the Ritz-Carlton for 17k. I just looked and its "only" $1000 a night arriving on Friday 1/19 for 5 nights. I just saved you 12k! I would suggest looking in to Village at Squaw Valley , Resort at Squaw Creek , PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn, Squaw Valley Lodge if you want to be in Squaw Valley. These are all great places, are ski in/out and are in or close to the Village at Squaw. Northstar is another great ski resort with a ton of lodging in the development. Northstar California. In Incline Village the Hyatt Regency is right on the lake and has a casino. It's only about 5 minutes from a cool local ski hill with amazing lake views called Diamond Peak but its a good 30 minutes from the big ski area of Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Northstar.

If you're looking for a small, more affordable place I would suggest in no particular order:
1. Basecamp Tahoe City
2. Mourelato's Lakeshore Resort
3. Cedar Glen Lodge

Once you figure out where you're staying/skiing let me know and I would be happy to give you some local tips on restaurants, bars, etc.

How's the snow so far this season? I'm looking to book really soon for the first week in March. Unless its projected to be concrete. Thanks.

If anyone has any insight what area to stay in at Heavenly, that would be much appreciated. Stagecoach or Stateline? I like to be close to the lifts. I feel like Stagecoach would be quicker / easier to get on the mt opposed to lines to get on the gondola, especially on the wknd. But I also like to play blackjack and mild nightlife and worry Stagecoach will be too far, especially if it snows. Stagecoach is also more reasonably priced.

There really isn't much lodging on near stagecoach lift and definitely no nightlife. My suggestion would definitely to be stay near stateline. There are a ton of hotels, motels, airbnb, casinos, restaurants, etc. all within a relatively short distance, in many cases walking distance, of the gondola.

Not sure why I didn't see your posts until today. Bottom line, conditions are absolutely insane. That is evidenced by the fact it took me over an hour to get from Truckee to Squaw this morning. Squaw got 48 inches in one 24 hour period on Saturday and 56 inches over the entire weekend. It's also been cold as hell (3 degrees in Truckee this morning) so conditions are absolutely epic. We are supposed to get another couple of feet on Wednesday. The big question is the snow level on this storm. Its supposed to be warmer so it may rain at the base but be great up top. Here is the forecast............

.WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH
THURSDAY AFTERNOON ABOVE 7000 FEET...

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible above 7000 feet. Total snow
accumulations of 6 to 10 inches, except 2 to 5 feet above 7000
feet. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph with ridge gusts
possibly exceeding 145 mph.

Uh oh, I booked an airbnb right at stagecoach just yesterday. My logic is just the quickest to get on the mountain to maximize skiing time. I was envisioning a long line at the gondola and then having to take another lift up. I figured I can take my time getting an uber from stagecoach down to the casinos whereas skiing is the rush. Oh well, I'm sure it'll work out. I also booked at the base of Kirkwood and Christy Inn at Squaw. There was not much availability left at Squaw.

This is fantastic fortuitous news. I've been getting emails about Utah getting bombarded but wasn't sure about Tahoe. All is booked and I'm ready to go. Thanks.

My buddies on south shore all go to the Stagecoach lift. Less crowded and quickest way on to the hill for sure. One of my best friends owns the Christy Lodge and Grahams restaurant that is attached. If you have a few extra $$$ have dinner at the bar in Grahams. Introduce yourself to Graham and tell him you know CAHusky and they will charge you double :)

Hahaha, you show up, I'll buy you dinner. I'll be there 3/7 - 3/10. Graham is the one I booked with.

I was fortuitous to catch rope drops at Mott and Killebrew Sunday.

It seems the trails are left open as most locals wander out of bounds.

I was at Alpine for a long weekend last weekend and hit the break between the storms. Since it was the end of CA's ski week Squaw was crowded so we peeled off to Alpine Meadows. There was as much snow as I've ever seen. We came over the Mt. Rose pass and it was pretty hairy. Maybe the most snow I've ever seen.

The wife and I stayed inbounds and as you said the locals (my son and his wife) dropped out of bounds.
I'm not a fan of hiking and skiing myself (I'm lazy) but they did a bunch of out of bounds runs and especially - (CAHusky you probably know this area) - they skied the the "munchkins" 4 times.

+1 on Grahams.

Apparently Heavenly has a lot of OOB terrain that you can access from the lifts that take you down to the casinos. So no hiking required to access, accept maybe at the bottom to get out.

I got into Kirkwood last night and there are 20' high walls each side of the road. Never seen anything like it. Another 1'-2' coming this week. Unreal.

We had mostly 8-10' snow walls on the side of the roads but I know they've continued to be dumped on this past week, so 20' -wow! It's not like any other place I've ever been - they were trucking snow out of Tahoe City and the northern resorts up to Truckee every night we were there!

Have an incredible time!
