SU is a major market for hockey to target, Hockey East could use a little expansion. Cuse sponsors WHOC so why haven't they pursued MHOC yet? I feel like they'd make a great addition to Hockey East, also a great rivalry for UConn.

I thought this discussion below was more current (I’ll look for another more current one that I have stuck in my mind) but this helps lay out the issues. They would also have to address the Title IX implications of additional mens sports scholarships/spending.

A UConn fan excited to “elevate” a Syracuse program. Eyeroll central.

Syracuse can pound sand. In every sport. Hockey east doesn’t need them. And we certainly don’t need them as a “rival” in hockey when we have Quinnipiac Yale umass providence and Boston college to compete with in our backyard. All 5 of those schools have played for a championship in the past 5 years and 4 of them have won a national title. And you think we need Syracuse around for a rival? Weird.

Hockey East is an all-New England conference, with all bus trips (other than to Orono) less than four hours. Syracuse fits neither, and would have to build a program from scratch. Should HE expand to 12 (I hope they do), my preferences are either Sacred Heart or Holy Cross. Both are easy drives for the team and its fans, have existing programs, and would elevate their profiles moving from Atlantic Hockey to HE. The gold ring would be Quinnipiac, but I don't see them leaving ECAC. SH and HC both create natural and accessible hockey rivals for UConn. Holy Cross women already compete in HE as well.

Eh. Some people think the purpose of a rival is to beat the crap out of them as often as you can. Not be happy where you avoid competing with them.

Unless, of course, you think the BCU model is how normal fan bases want to operate.

We have plenty of rivals we need to leap frog in our backyard already that we are competing with that I am completely satisfied having as rivals. I could care less about elevating any program in the Syracuse athletic department. It has nothing to do with “avoiding” them.

Hilarious UConn fans need to lecture other UConn fans on here about “wanting to compete with a rival and not avoiding them” when that school is Syracuse and they apparently went to bat for a crime syndicate from Kentucky to avoid competing with their “rival” for the last acc spot. Spare me. I am excited enough trying to compete with umass providence BC BU Quinnipiac Yale Sacred Heart etc as rivals. I feel syracuse would be a terrible addition to hockey east and is an unnecessary rival for UConn.

1) Kuck Fuse.
2) Only interested in anything about hockey in Syracuse if they bring back some notable alumni.

Way off base. In order to make this even close to equivalent, Cuse hockey would have to exist.

A better example, ironically, would be the opposite, in Lacrosse. We have some notable advantages over other schools, and i could see the sissy ACC schools blocking us, for that reason.

We're not in a position to do anything to them, but the idea of them in HE is madness, for exactly the reason @Viet Vet said - they just don't fit. This can be mutually exclusive to whatever you're dreaming about with "rivalries"

Agreed. The only team from outside New England to compete in Hockey East was Notre Dame. That sure didn't work out. Seriously doubt Hockey East is about repeat that experiment and add a team that far outside its base region. Especially a school with pretty much no college ice hockey history to begin with.

I appreciate your supportive comment. If you are a fellow season ticketholder, let's get together prior to, or between periods of, the next game. I am in section 114, Row N, seat 9. If you travel to away games, perhaps we can meet up for a pint on the road as well.

Not a season ticket holder for men's ice hockey, but I'll look you up if we make it to a game.

Probably won’t happen unless they get their own Pegula that foots the bill for a venue and to seed the first few seasons of scholarships.

And figures out what men’s sport to cut or women’s sport to add. WHOCK there is as much an offset for football as it is anything else.

This came up before at Syracuse…nothing really came of it. Doubt anything will now or in the near future. As to Hockey East, no thank you. It is the New England league. If we need a new member, find one here. If I could have anyone it would be Harvard, but of course that is impossible.

I could be wrong, hoping someone can shed some light on this, but I thought there was a stipulation in the HE by-laws that if a school had an established team in HE that the women's and/or men's team had in automatic invite for their respect team once they decided to support the team. Since HC women are in HE, once the men decide to upgrade there's already a spot in HE.

RPI has been discussed, but I agree with adding HC. AIC could also be a target, gets us to the MGM Grand Casino!
