"But Swofford was blindsided by ACC charter member Maryland’s move to the Big Ten, two people with direct knowledge of the situation said. ACC officials found out Maryland President Wallace D. Loh was in talks with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany only through media reports Friday and Saturday, and Swofford never heard back from any officials in College Park despite repeated attempts to contact them throughout the weekend."

Or Tranghese:

Tranghese still feels the scars from 2003 when the ACC swooped in and took Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech. It wasn't so much the raid, it was how it was handled.
To this day, Tranghese says he was “lied to and misled.” ACC officials maintain they contacted Tranghese as a courtesy. Tranghese says he is still waiting for that call.

The tone of that story doesn't seem to bode well for UConn.

Swofford was busy taking pawns in a game of chess and bragging about the number of pieces he's taken- blissfully unaware of their value. While pawns (BCU, SU, Pitt) can be valuable you need pieces with real value. VT is the only school that has earned their keep so far.

Swofford has one choice. Force ND: All in or out. No more hybrid. Then add Louisville and UConn.

Besides being Al's kid, who is Tony Terzi? Does he have any credibility? Because...

@TerziMedia: UConn fans, don't count on your phone to ring from the ACC. Louisville and Navy, a national brand, will get serious consideration.

@TerziMedia: Friends of mine with ESPN say they are hearing Louisville, not UConn, will be invited to join the ACC. And, that Big East ftbl will fold.

The beauty of it is that Swofford has zero leverage to force ND in, and if be forces them out, FSU and Clemson are even closer to leaving.

Who knows what will happen, but it looks like the ACC will survive only if it arrests the vortex of rumors. Only potential way is Notre Dame all in, UConn and Louisville #15&16. ND won't want to. So there will be that.

But #15&16 for the Big 10 will endlessly haunt the ACC.

Big 10 should just go for UVA and UConn. I'd be content with that. Gives the Big 10 MD, Penn, NJ, pseudo-NY, and CT. In other words, the northeast.

Swofford is learning a valuable schoyard lesson.

When you are the second weakest kid in a group, you do everything to preserve the weakest kid. If you punch out the weak kid you make yourself the target.

Everybody over the last few days have "sources"! ESPN - Big East Football will fold? Sure.

and perhaps more importantly, you don't hook up with the girls the biggest, meanest kid has a crush on, even on a part-time basis. It will end badly for you.

Pretty much. I mean 4 out of the 5 teams they picked were privates (maybe Pitt is public though, no idea) and that is not the way expansion is going. Only VT and Syracuse get fan support anyway and they were more or less forced to bring in VT even though they weren't wanted. And then the Big Eastish deal with Notre Dame. They would have probably been in a better place if they invited VT, UConn, Rutgers, WVU and Cuse and set up an ACC network. To be fair though Miami was a no brainer at the time.

If we get the dough, Deleone will be able to afford a bigger house, which means more need for wallpapers, which will be more ways to run up the middle for 1 yard on first down.
he still has this secret coded play hidden in the marx brothers playbook
“Hey diddle diddle, the cat in the fiddle, this time I think we go up the middle!”

So I'm confused, Swofford is weak but also a ladies man? So hes like the Biebs of conference commissioners?

Biebs better calm down the rest of the ACC.

Swofford and ND must have known that taking ND into the conference will come at some price since the B1G wanted ND to establish a presence on the east coast. ND is the second most valuable college football team behind Texas. No ACC teams are amongst the top 10 or maybe 20 in value right now. From that perspective, what's better to have for the conference? 8 UMD games or 5 ND games? Once everything is said and done, then people can have ground to criticize others. It is possible that the ACC can outlast the Big 12 if the right moves are made. If the Pac-12 was trying for Texas, the ACC give them a shot too, as crazy as it may sound. Tallahassee is on the Gulf of Mexico, so is the state of Texas.

Swofford outmanuevered himself. He has no leverage for Notre Dame, who is in a position of ultimate strength and for the foreseeable future the ACC is now in the opposite position.

If the ACC takes UConn, you do realize the ACC would have access to more homes in their markets than any other conference? Includes Boston, Chicago, NYC, Miami, Charlotte and Atlanta, at least. That is 6 out of the top 10 metropolises. Add Texas and the ACC has 8 out of the top 10 covered. Only exceptions would be Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

As soon as the ACC signed a smaller TV deal they were vulnerable, If any of their teams leave they have no leverage to bring in somebody new that truly adds value. With no big fish left in the Bigeast, the hunter has become the hunted. If anyone has learned anything from the Bigeast demise its kill or be killed and in this cut throat world of college athletics the ACC is doomed. I don’t care what any conference is saying publicly they are all trying to be one of four. So maybe not today or tomorrow but it is end game for the ACC unless ESPN or ND comes to the rescue and we all know how that turn out.

After that move by the B1G, I am sure ESPN is willing to make some adjustments. If they don't, it'll be a HUGE loss for them.

We will see how it plays out but I think everyone realizes this as much about a TV power play ESPN FOX CBS nbc as it is college athletics
