Sweet 16 Games Thread

The last 5 minutes and OT of that Arkansas-TTech game are exactly why most who understand basketball and are not Calipari sycophants say he is not a good in-game coach.

Sure, he is fine (usually) when his team has the overwhelming talent advantage. But put him and his teams in a situation like last night when they had a 95% chance of winning when they went up 13 with 4:43 left and there they are, finding a way to lose. His teams consistently lack discipline, and that is one of the qualities you must have and instill into your teams to close out games.

The commentators mentioned it several times during OT... During Tech's comeback Arkansas players threw up several "ill-advised 3-point shots" when all they needed was to work their offense to get higher-percentage shots AND work more time off the clock.

Watching Calipari's teams play offense in high pressure situations often reminds me of watching Jim Boeheim's best Syracuse teams. Both of them allowed their teams to play a more free-wheeling, less disciplined style and it often comes back to bite Calipari as it did Boeheim. It is the biggest reason why Syracuse used to lose some really head-scratching games, including to us in the 1980's where we were obviously the less talented team on paper. And Calipari has a similar problem.

Thankfully, neither one of them will ever be the coach of our Huskies. Sucks for Razorback fans though!

And people continue to laugh and say that UK fans ran him off. Well, maybe they did, but what you saw last night is nothing new for Calipari. Been going on for years, choking big games away. How do you not want him gone if you are UK?

I wonder how we would have fared against Maryland
It would have been a real tough matchup for Karaban, but also vice versa. We'd probably have seen double bigs for the first time in a while.

I think I can get Houston, Michigan State, Duke, and maybe Purdue.

Seriously, it is kinda fun, and also illustrative as we move into a time of building next year's roster.
BYU had you stumped, eh?

Noticed there are two ex-Ruttys in the field. If Pikiell gets canned, maybe we should bring him on board just for recruiting and not let him near the court.

There’s some teams I can get because of one player I can identify.

Like team next to Duke is Arizona I think (Caleb Love UNC). The team with Iona is Florida because of Walter Clayton. The team with Ohio as the PG is Bama because of Sears.

2nd at the top is Michigan because Yale = Wolf. Top at the end is Arkansas because UK and FAU = Wagner and Davis.

After that I’m tapped out lol

All of yours above occurred to me (plus imagining some stability in multiple BYU guys), before I decided not to wade in fully, and just set myself up for the Purdue 'joke.'

Just commented on that.

Yeah, when I saw the two RS, all I could think of was, "Last year, Cam, and then who else left besides Gavin Griffiths?"

And with all that, Harper & Bailey will be the O&DS as expected. It's been a while since anybody posted that we should have hired Pikiell.

Love this Mich St roster with all these guards that can play

Mostly because Chris Beard is a pile of doodoo

I’m not cool with Beard but Izzo’s got his share of skeletons. Most of these guys do. I just find the veneration of any of these guys kind of odd, and I’ve never been an MSU or Izzo fan.

Lotta dough just changed hands a la Duhon in 2004.

Funny game to play of guess these sweet 16 teams

It kinda sums up where we’re at in 2025 when the SEC has 7 teams in the Sweet 16 yet only 14ish total players on that list started their careers in the conference. Also, it seems like half of those that I counted started at a different SEC school before reaching the Sweet 16 at their current university.
