Shogun was great.

On your last post, I think you have to look deeper. I also consider myself a cinephile, and while the blockbusters haven’t been as impressive, A24 and some smaller Indie. companies still make great films. There are some tremendous Korean/Asian films out recently-ish. Aftersun was incredible, Another Round is one of my highest recommends, Past Lives, Perfect Days (Love Wenders). The Sound of Metal, The Father Banshees has grown on me a ton. I don’t mean to list…
That's my point, you really have to search for indies and foreign films now because Hollywood is so broken. A24 has put out some good indies. I liked Good Time, Midsommar (The Wicker Man was better though.) Ex Machina and Moonlight were great but they were made a long time ago. Sound of Metal was really good. The Father Banshees? The Banshees of Inisherin wasn't for me.

Looks like I'll be watching Shogun.

Am I the only one who thinks "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin was an odd choice as the background music for this commercial featuring women athletes?

Not criticizing Zep - I am a fan.
I just returned home from 5 days in The Finger Lake Region and spent one of the nights in Binghamton to see Get The Led Out. They are an absolutely great cover band that tours throughout the country with a lot of those dates on the East Coast and in New England.
I highly recommend seeing them if you get a chance. Prices are very reasonable.

Every generation does the “they don’t make them like they used to” about everything. You’re right, there are absolutely great movies being made that would stand up against anything that’s come before them. The issue is that the economics of the film industry don’t incentivize the major studios to make them, so you’ve gotta look a little more.
That's my point on all of this, as far as I'm concerned the mainstream culture is basically dead when it comes to movies and music these days. There's of course still really good underground rap, rock and indie/foreign films being made but it's not the stuff that's being mass produced for the mainstream. It wasn't like that in the 90's. There was so much amazing mainstream rap, rock, Hollywood movies. Same for the decades before the 90's.

Not sure what this even means though, really. Rock was in it’s heydey in the 60’s/70’s. The 90s had good bands but alternative and punk and grunge, the classic rock wasn’t good.

There are great mainstream Rappers still. You probably just don’t listen. Anyone who consistently listens to the genre will tell you that.

All of Griselda is top tier, JID and most of Dreamville (J Cole’s label) is great. Joey Bada$$ has dropped some borderline classics. Ton of guys getting more well known now. JPEGMAFIA, etc. I could go on. Some you will, some you won’t like of course.

Again, I mentioned this whole nostalgia bias thing, as did @BigErnMcCracken. I’m sure some of it is unavoidable because that’s when you grew up and started liking these things, but I disagree with your greater point that things are simply worse.

This was a big deal at the time, see the video below. Perhaps the super bowl show wasn't as big, but In Living Color was rolling and people actually switched channels. Obviously you can't please everyone but you have to try to please a lot of people, especially the people in attendance. I mean, they could say "well the game sucked but at least we got to see a great half-time show."

Maybe go in a different direction entertainment wise. I mean, I can't even imagine going to see Lamar live and watching him walk around a stage blabbering on about whatever. He's no Eminem as far as I can tell, for whatever that's worth. But Jay Z and Beyonce, yeah, that's entertaining. Live music and entertainment. Maybe go with some cirque du soleil type performers or some sheet. Heck, have local kids play basketball or flag football. Anything is better than this travesty.

What do I mean? I mean there were amazing mainstream rock bands in the 90's- STP, Pearl Jam, The Black Crowes GNR, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Rage....the list goes on and on and then hundreds of great mainstream rock bands from the decades before.

As for rap just take any random year from the entire 90's and the Golden Age and there's just so many great mainstream rappers and so many mainstream banger tracks. '95- Gangster's Paradise Coolio and LV, Shook Ones pt. 2 Mobb Deep, Survival of the Fittest Mobb Deep, I got 5 on It Luniz, You're All I Need Meth and Mary, Dear Mama Tupac, Broken Language Smoothe Da Hustler, GZA Liquid Swords, Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers Crooklyn Dodgers, Mad Izm Channel Live and KRS-One, Runnin' The Pharcyde, Drop The Pharcyde, Players Anthem Junior Mafia, Incarcerated Scarfaces Raekwon, Livin' Proof Group Home, Cell Therapy Goodie Mobb...

I strongly disagree with you about today's mainstream rap. I know all of it because I've been a huge rap fan my whole life. I always want new mainstream stuff to excite me but it's been garbage for a while now IMO. Basically all the hip hop heads I know lament what's happened to mainstream rap.

Yeah again, you’re being a nostalgia merchant. No one is saying its the golden age of the 90s, but those who actually look for real quality Hip Hop/Rap will find it.

I can name bangers from dozens of guys nowadays like you just listed from guys from the 90s. And this isn’t me favoring this era, I like 90s/early 2000s rap more. You’re just using a broad stroke for no reason.

PS….There are good Rock Bands around, too. Went to 10+ shows of well known to semi-well known bands the past 2 years. I can name then if you’d like, but I imagine you’ll just say they’re mediocre no matter what.

It's my opinion that mainstream rap, rock, and Hollywood movies are bad now. It doesn't mean every single mainstream rap song, rock song, and Hollywood movie made nowadays is awful but the overwhelming majority of it is really bad IMO. Yes, I'm using broad strokes. It's not a hot take, i've wasted so much time listening to and watching stuff only to be disappointed over and over again. You're the one claiming I don't know the mainstream rappers now.

You like the current mainstream stuff, good for you.

In 1994 Jurassic Park, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, and Forrest Gump were all in theaters at the same time.

In 1995 Heat, Braveheart, Seven, The Usual Suspects, and Casino were all in theaters at the same time.

I've always been a film nerd and it's really sad what's happened to the industry. The last truly great movie IMO is Parasite and that's a Korean film from 2019. I have to go all the way back to 2007 for the last great year of movies and sadly I don't see Hollywood changing anytime soon.

I want great movies to be made again but would settle on them just making good movies again. Most of what is produced now is pretty unwatchable IMO.
And to a lesser extent, when was the last great iconic comedy? Seth Rogan said they never would have made Superbad today and the industry just is not set up to produce edgy comedies today.

Movies like Meet the Parents, Wedding Crashers, Old School, Anchorman are 20 years old at this point.

This thread has some serious legs.

Have discussed with friends how in the heyday there were always 3-4 A list comediens who you’d hit the theater for when their new flick came out, Carey, Ferrell, Sandler, Black. Now there is no one. Kevin Hart does nothing for me, the others don’t translate to film. Although I do find John Sena and that massive mug hysterical.

Oh stop, we all know you would have gotten pumped for some Sabrina Carpenter. You’da been thumb dancing all the way to kick off.

I was just telling my daughter (and my classes... a bit of a rant, I guess?) about how talentless Carpenter is. My students even agreed that if she hadn't been a "child star, " nobody would give a flying f who she is. Her shtick will be over in about 6 1/2 minutes based on my watch. So, no, I wouldn't have been thumb-dancing anywhere near that garbage. Tend to avoid thumb-dancing all together, fwiw.

Sabrina fills the market share for breathy bubble gum young female pop star with a catchy synthesized sound, generic. Always a market for it with tweenage girls. Just have to time entry in just as the last one gets old (Megan Trainor type). Get your catchy hit out, get the summer tour kicking, make your money and then fade into the horizon. I’m sure the agent is like, hey Ariana Grande’s last hit is fading, release!! When these girls sing I feel their açaí bowl breath hitting my face.

It truly is the worst kinda music, but there are young ears out there that eat it up.

The most hilarious thing about this thread are the middle aged (or older) white guys complaining about the Super Bowl halftime show as if they are the target audience.

Whatever you say. The NFL doesn't care if you personally do not like the halftime show. They already had your attention. Three/Four days a week. Every week for five months.

Shows greatness is achieved not given. He was going to figure out a way to make it no matter what. The gang stuff was unavoidable for someone growing up like he did. Even when he was a nobody little kid he figured out how to get noticed. This is a great story thanks for sharing.
The fact that Snoop is still as relevant as he is is absolutely incredible.
