Sue Bird number retirement ceremony

I'll admit I don't know who has had their number retired for UConn, but I'm pretty stunned that it took until today for it to happen for Bird.

Okay, I looked it up and Lobo and Cash had their numbers retired previously. I imagine Taurasi's turn will be fairly soon.

They have to go into BB hall of fame before their number can be retired

In order for a number to retired, said player has to be inducted into the Naismith basketball Hall of Fame. Sue Bird was just inducted in September 2025.

Schools have very different criteria in regards to retiring numbers. Iowa has done it about 5 minutes after their star player used up eligibility...twice. I thought maybe UConn waited until after a player's pro career was over. Hall of Fame is a pretty high bar.

If not alot of numbers could no longer be used

It has to be a high bar or as said earlier there would be no available numbers... Have you seen the wall in the practice facility?

I still do worry about a number problem in about 5-10 years. I think a lot of former players will get into the hall of fame for various contributions and it could get tough. Think about it. We now have great players, coaches, broadcasters, owners, and front office folks. It could get crazy.

I could see someday where the number can be used again but with a patch or something for the player that got it retired.

I hear ya, but when this all started there was no way anybody knew where it was going to end up, so setting the bar that high from the beginning is interesting.

We’re special.

Probably an issue to deal with after our lifetimes, now that the NCAA allows all single or double digit numbers. Of course Geno doesn't issue 0, 00 or 1 but that'll probably change in the future, too. So many pros in both the NBA and W that have popular numbers that I'm waiting to see who will be the first to wear #77.

If & when one day UConn WBB has 70 to 80 retired numbers/Hall of Famers then I'd be more concerned about the lack of wall space at Gampel lol!

Congrats to all our Hall of Famers!!
