Study: Women's sports coverage at an all-time low

Um, is anyone surprised?

So the media build interest in select men's teams? I'm shocked - shocked I say.

Just underscores how lucky we UCONN WCBB fans are when it comes to media coverage and the HUGE TV coverage the program has. Simply an embarrassment of riches and I love it.

Curious as to which six weeks and three weeks of ESPN news they monitored - it could skew results significantly based on the sports calendar. There are more professional mens sports so they are more likely to hit an important period in a men's sport season than in a women's sports season.
Not saying there is not a problem but a six week sample period seems really small to form any meaningful conclusions.

This study is really stupid. If the marketplace wants coverage of men's sports and not much coverage of women's then that is what the market should get.

If your college women's teams are not covered well by ESPN then go to the university's athletic web site and read to your heart's content.

I agree. Advocating for more coverage of women's basketball is a waste of time 'cause the market is what the market it... and we're not part of it.

Frankly, what details they list suggest to me that the study is flawed. They watched SportsCenter for three weeks? That show is designed to be highlights of the most popular stuff; of course it's skewed towards the major men's sports. In the meantime, it appears to me that coverage of sports like college softball and volleyball are only increasing; I think there's been volleyball on one of the ESPN channels every Friday this season. In the spring, there was softball on two or three nights a week plus coverage of the entire postseason. That didn't happen when I was in high school.
