What was there before? West Campus and the grad apartments?

West Campus is still where it always was. Gone is Connecticut Commons, which used to be the Grad dorms in the 70's and 80's. I spent three years in Norwalk dorm as a grad student, and now that is gone.

Not everyone in the Grad dorms was foreign born. Yes, I was born in the USA, as were a number of others that I knew in those dorms.

Does anyone have any idea what they plan to do with the old rec center and fieldhouse once this is complete? It's prime real estate on campus and I know the master plan wanted Hillside in that area to be a student focused corridor (with the Union across the street).

I was pretty impressed with this when I was there with my daughter for admitted students day in April. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress first-hand when I drop her off for orientation on Monday. I'm glad she'll be able to enjoy the benefits of it.

Here's a link which contains the floor plan. The place is no joke.

When I was a student in the 70's, all we had was some cardboard boxes to play in.

I was at UConn in the late 70's into the 80's. You had cardboard boxes? All we had to play in was mud, and lots of it. UConn seemed to be one big mud pit at the time.

Not if you were at UConn in the early 1980's. There was more than enough mud to go around in that time period. The object of many a walk across campus was not to sink into the stuff.

Without commenting on your willingness to tell the truth @CL82, wouldn't you have needed to leave your dorm for any classes to know about the campus' excessive early 80s?

You caught me and completely unmasked the great mud cover-up.;)

My first class was a cross campus sprint from Wheeler to the Math/Science Building. What I remember is calling getting up, calling downstairs to order an omelette (usually sausage, onion and cheddar) and some toast, shaving and showering, going downstairs getting a cup of coffee, slapping the omelette between two slices of toast and taking off across campus. There may have been mud, I don't remember it.

Halcyon days, right?

Saw it this morning when I dropped my daughter off at orientation in the McMahon lobby. Lots of glass went up on the façade facing the bookstore. Nice facelift to the McMahon lobby as well! Looked a lot more inviting than the last time I saw it 27 years ago.
