StorrsCentral: Get to Know UConn Football’s New OC Nunzio Campanile

Is this the guy that Sebastian Maniscalco talks about in his stand up? Lol

-> As the football program turns the page from the prosperous Jim Mora era to the new Jason Candle coaching regime, they’ve tapped into another famous Jersey family. Meet Nunzio Campanile, offensive coordinator, from the first family of football coaching in the Garden State.

“That’s football royalty right there,” Hurley said. “… They’re like the Hurleys of football in New Jersey. No pressure.” <-

-> “Coming from where I came from (Toledo) and having control of the offense for 14 years, I wanted to have a staff, starting with the coordinators, who believed in the same things philosophically that I do,” Candle said. “Being able to run the football and set the table with that, and be able to get into some really good play-action passes off of that. You’re based off of your reputation and what you are in coaching by word of mouth, you get a lot of recommendations and a lot of people recommended (Campanile) very highly. <-

-> “I always say that we are going to build the offense around the players that we have available and what they do best,” Campanile said. “Do we want to stretch the field horizontally and vertically? Absolutely. Do we want to create explosive plays? Of course.

“The No. 1 thing we have to make sure we are doing is the things are players are capable of doing. That is what spring is for. We get an opportunity to learn about a lot of guys, what they are good at and how we can put them in position to be successful.” <-

-> With spring practice beginning this week, the time has come for Campanile to crack the code on a whole new group of players and a brand new program. He will do it with an open mind and plenty of confidence, knowing his family has helped him develop a versatile skillset, and he now is working with someone like-minded and talented.

“I think my track record basically says, ‘What can that guy do? Let’s do that,’” Campanile said. “That has really been a trademark of Coach Candle’s career, and I think that is one of the reasons we are a good pair. We see the game rather similarly, and I think that is important.” <-
