StorrsCentral: Get to Know UConn Football’s New DC, Ryan Manalac

I am hoping when Candle and Manalac get more comfortable at UConn they are little more free with their comments. Right now they seem very controlled, scripted…even cliched. I enjoyed Mora’s honesty and I am hoping this staff loosens up. They seem fine…just a little boring.

(and before someone jumps in and says “i want someone who coaches well..not someone who interviews well…I agree. I am just making an observation)

Candle strikes me as being a pretty reserved, serious type. Not sure we are going to get a lot of yay, rah, rah sunshine from this dude.

Win, win, win, win. Everything else is fluff.

I really don’t want rah rah rah sunshine. That is worse. And while Diaco’s comments were interesting….that didn’t work either…he was just odd.

I am just hoping they evolve to giving some insight in their answers instead of generic responses. Again…yes..winning is all that matters. But as a fan, I enjoy getting insight and learning from a coaches perspective…instead of just getting responses that could have been AI generated.

Not a complaint…just an observation.

I’m giving lots of passes, for now. We’ve never coached together. I’ve not coached any of the guys. I’m still learning their names and what they can do. 100 players and coaches just arrived in last 2 months. Heck, I just learned Storrs has 2 r’s and no e.

But other than that, let me tell you what we’re planning.

That was a Coachspeak 101. He talked but said nothing. The coaches have to coach up the guys and there are four sessions before the season and we have to take advantage of each one. Yep.

Great interview. Everyone should take a listen. Our defense will be AGGRESSIVE!!!
That's what I'm talking about! We need some Legion of Boom shiz this year.

Fair point. He’s probably a pretty decent guy if he stuck around a program for a decade and commanded a lot of respect and support.. Just win and the rest takes care of itself. Imagine Hurley if he had a few years of losing records. He would have been run out of town as a loud mouth, no-class loser for his antics. Instead, he’s a beloved for being brash and passionate.

So he would be the anti-Diaco? We shall see how Candle does, but I think Mora had peaked.

Tough to do much more than that when you haven't held a practice, never mind a game.

So far, I like what I'm seeing. The rebuilding of the staff and then the team was masterful. That was an incredibly difficult task. How good those players are, and how well they will play together, is to be decided.

Candle gives off "old pro vibes." He seems neither excited nor overwhelmed. It's tough to make many judgments in the infancy of his tenure here, but I would call his vibe "quietly competent and determined." It's left me looking forward to the spring game, summer practices, and the season.
