There's no debate about who is the top player in women's college basketball this year. The thing is, we so expect UConn's Breanna Stewart to once again pick up much of the hardware at the end of the season, it can seem superfluous to single her out any particular week.
After all, couldn't she be the espnW player of the week every week? Well, perhaps so, but this past week, it just made sense to say, "This one's for you, Stewie," after her standout performance in what was the most anticipated game of the season.
In the Huskies' 66-54 victory over South Carolina on Feb. 8, Stewart was what she has been virtually all of her college career: the problem that foes simply can't solve. Stewart had 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. She also had 10 rebounds and blocked five shots, while playing 40 minutes.
Afterward, Stewart praised teammates Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson in particular, as both played key defensive roles along with scoring in double figures.
"We wouldn't be in this position without those two," Stewart said. True, and they both deserve a ton of credit.
