Doh, some of my bottom 25 picks are missing from the bottom of the efficiency ratings, but I do see Weber St. there. Also Eastern Washington seemed pretty obvious based on how badly they've been getting drubbed.

Week 6 is now completed.

Below are 3 screenshots:
1. All Players
2. Watch List only (i.e. those players on Naismith, Wade, Wooden or Drysdale Watch Lists)
3. Freshman only

Notes:
Purple = Only includes games versus DI teams
Orange = Only includes games in Level 1 (definition below)
Stats = Only includes games in Level 1

Tier 1 games are games Home, Neutral or Away vs RPI Top 50
Level 1 games are games: Home vs RPI Top 30, Neutral vs RPI Top 50 and Away vs RPI Top 75
O = Overall (i.e All D1 games)
F = Filtered (i.e. Only Level 1 games)
Efficiency definition
Usage explanation
Impact = Efficiency x Usage. I use this to indicate the importance of player to their team.

Expect top teams to play between 9 and 15 Level 1 games throughout the season.

Finally this will be the last week posting, as I will provide spreadsheets where you can view if you want.

Thanks for putting this together - is there any possibility there are flaws in the underlying data? It seems like the GP is not 6 weeks' worth of games, and there are no Stanford players on any lists, including the "Watch List" that definitely does include Stanford players (unless you cut off the worst performing individuals?). Thanks!

As per the notes the Stats shown this week are for only those qualified as Level 1 games.

Notes:
Purple = Only includes games versus DI teams
Orange = Only includes games in Level 1 (definition below)
Stats = Only includes games in Level 1

Tier 1 games are games Home, Neutral or Away vs RPI Top 50
Level 1 games are games: Home vs RPI Top 30, Neutral vs RPI Top 50 and Away vs RPI Top 75

Here are the remaining players on the Watch List

Very interesting data. Thanks again for continuing to post these updates.

I also noticed that most players have their PERs calculated for only 1, 2, or 3 games based upon the limited number of Level 1 games played so far this year.

Would you be willing to post the info for all of the games recorded thus far until the sample set of Level 1 games is significantly larger? I thought the prior postings included all games played to date, even those played against the "cupcake" teams.

Regardless of PER formula and number of games recorded, Oregon's Hebard is indeed an efficient player.

Got it. So does that mean if a team a player previously played suddenly falls below the RPI cutoff, that game is removed from that player's efficiency stats? If so, it seems very difficult to assess player trajectory over the season, since games may count, then not count, then count again, etc. What is the rationale against including all games played, regardless of competition, and then just adjusting for strength of opposition?

Correct.

Note: I have still included for all D1 games (shown in purple) but I have also now introduced Filtered (shown in Orange). By the end of the year it will be more meaningful to look at Filtered vs All D1 games.

The spreadsheet (coming soon) will allow you to enter criteria (All or Filtered) with the option to select by any of: AP Poll, Coaches Poll, RPI or Massey.

The AP and Coaches will be fixed games but RPI and Massey will be fluid (i.e. change throughout the season based on rating).

I will edit the Week 6 posts when I finish work to show stats for both All D1 and Filtered but with reduced number of stats shown (probably GP, PPG, RPG, APG, TS%) so it is still readable.

Week 10 is now completed.

Notes:
For those who are still reading I have been reviewing your feedback and have now included a 'Weighted Efficiency (WTG)' Rating which weights the Efficiency (STD) by Massey Team Rating.

Method: Efficiency multiplied (Massey Team Rating less the Average Massey Team Rating).

I changed the method to remove the 0.75 "multiplier" and have instead capped teams at each extreme (max +100% and min -80%).
  • The max is +100%. A Player who scores a Standard Efficiency (STD) of 15 is equal to Weighted Efficiency (WTG) of 30 (i.e. 15 * (1 +100%) = 30).
    • There are currently 6 teams max capped:
      • Baylor
      • South Carolina
      • UConn
      • UCLA
      • Oregon
      • Louisville
  • The min is -80%. A Player who scores Standard Efficiency (STD) of 15 is equal to Weighted Efficiency (WTG) of 3 (i.e. 15 * (1 -80%) = 3).
    • Their are currently 10 teams min capped:
      • Chicago St.
      • Coppin St.
      • Florida A&M
      • Charleston So.
      • South Carolina St.
      • Mississippi Val.
      • Tennessee St.
      • Hartford
      • UIC
      • Northwestern St.
Purple = Only includes games versus DI teams.
Green = Only includes games versus DI teams with Weighted Massey Team Rating.
% Change = shows the percentage change from Standard to Weighted.

STD = Standard
WTG = Weighted

Here is the long promised google spreadsheet for 2019-20 Stats (up to Week 14 including games played 09 Feb 2020).

To reduce loading time there are now 3 separate spreadsheets instead of only one with 3 tabs:
  1. Season Week 14, Week 13
  2. Non Conference Week 14, Week 13
  3. Conference Week 14, Week 13
There are 2 slicers (filters)
  1. Class
  2. Conference OR Team
Edit: Added Week 14 Stats (20 Feb 2020)

Instructions on using slicer

1. click drop-down (see screenshot below)
2. click clear
3. click desired option (tick will appear)
4. click "OK" button
5. wait for spreadsheet to update

Note: After changing filter make sure you scroll to top of page
