May be an image of text that says 'enc There's no excuse for how I handled the of the game vs. South Carolina. It's unlike what do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted. The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don't want my actions to detract from that. I've had a great relationship with their staff, and sincerely want to apologize to them. -Geno Auriemma လျိနီုးလံး ባደየ'

The discussion here on the BY has certainly been charged over this. Losses will do that. I am pleased that Geno took the high road after some time to think about it. I also hope he personally conveys the same message to Dawn.

The right thing to do but man he comes out of this looking terrible. No matter how many years he has been doing this you would think he would have better self control well into his 70’s now.
I haven’t been a defender of Geno on this until now. We all make mistakes. There is never a wrong time to do the right thing. I applaud Geno for making things right.

Considering Geno does things quietly (don't laugh), like being one of the first to write a check to Pat Summit's foundation, and that the program as a whole does't over publicize things (recruits in uniforms, selection sunday live reaction, etc, etc), I wouldn't be surprised if he's already reached out to Staley. It's tough timing though, as do you want to do that now, before the big game tomorrow, or wait until afterwards? I'm hoping the former happened.

i'm surprised that Geno didn't take the high road..........that said, I've met Dawn in person several times and she's always been very pleasant but when it's game time, she's well known to curse like a sailor at opposing coaches, players and referees.......that and her constant working of the refs to the point of abuse makes her anything but an innocent party in all this........

.-.
I don't think I'm being picky, but a true apology would have also mentioned Dawn Staley by name. When I hear him saying "staff," I'm not sure I'm also hearing head coach.
I wouldn't be surprised if Geno has already reached out to Dawn in private to have a conversation between just the two of them, and then followed up with the public statement to address the rest of the staff and players.

I applaud Geno for the statement. I also would not be surprised if he was encouraged to issue the statement by the AD and UConn president. Everyone realizes that his behavior was personally damaging and hurt the team and the university.

I suspect that Geno senses he has limited opportunities, given his age and today's competitive women's' game, to win another title and he thought this was UConn's year. It also seems that this has been a team that he has become particularly fond of as young women as well as players. It had to be incredibly frustrating to see it slip away and to also see the game devolve into the type of physical struggle he dislikes. (One of the reasons I love UConn is they play such a beautiful, fluid game). No excuse for his actions, but a reason why it may have occurred.

I’m guessing it was intentional to not mention Dawn by name. I’m sure he truly felt he needed to publicly apologize. What he did was inappropriate. But I also suspect he honestly feels that Dawn did something inappropriate.

He likes and respects Dawn. When he was the Olympic team coach, he chose Dawn to be part of his coaching staff and recommend her as head coach the next Olympics. I’m convinced he meant no insult to her in the apology

Good start but hope he is man enough to pick up the phone and convey that to Dawn personally...
I think Dawn may actually be a little busy right now, but I'm sure he will over the next couple of weeks.

Few will want to hear this, but Geno should have retired as king last year. 72 now, and the game is passing him by. He was uncontrollable last night. Kept digging his own ditch deeper in postgame. Contradicting himself and his own players, complaining about a jersey his own player ripped, then crawfishing. Dawn clearly shook his hand before and after the game. Aging Can cause a person to lose his filter and judgement. Hate to see him dwindle into a cranky old man who doesn’t know when to turn in his keys to the gym. The transition from him is both inevitable and soon. The program will die a slow death if he hangs around past his expiration date. Sure, the future without Geno is scary, but a future with him may even be scarier at this point.

Interesting perspective. I'd guess lots of fans of other teams would love to see Geno step down.

Fact is, he coached his defending championship team to an undefeated season until the final 4. I'm not sure the game has passed him by.

Knowing Geno (in the way any of us on the Boneyard can say we "know" someone by watching and listening to them over many years in a public forum) and the type of person he has shown himself to be, I have little doubt that he will in due time call Dawn to apologize. They are two HOF members that love the game of women's basketball and have guided so many. They certainly have to respect that in each other. They will mend any broken fences and move on from this. Let's hope we all can do the same.

Do we really need to listen to a Baylor fan predict about the status of our coach???
