I'm still convinced that a few years down the road the narrative will be "how the hell did three teams pass on Castle in that draft?".

For a guy that was talked about being the first pick of the draft in most of the early mocks, Sarr has been really underwhelming. Seems to be a plus athlete, and a good handle for his size, but not enough to make up for the general lack of instincts out there. Maybe he can be coached up, but just a really raw player now.

He was drafted that high not because of the player he currently is, but the player teams think he can turn into down the road. High risk/high reward, as there is no guarantee his potential will ever be realized. But definitely a very rough start to his NBA career.
With a player like Clingan, the risk is much lower as he has a high floor and even if he only ends up doing 1 thing really well in his career (lockdown defense in the paint), that is still enough to be an important contributor on a winning team. And if he is able to develop other areas of his game (post game, 3-pt shot, etc), he'll be that much more of an impact player and possible All Star some years.
Castle is in a similar boat to Clingan (high floor) but has an even higher ceiling as if he ever develops a consistent 3-pt shot, the sky is the limit.
He was drafted that high because Wemby is also French and he is really good, and the NBA front offices are really that stupid.
Applies to the other French 1st round draft picks too. I predict zero all-star picks or second contracts in total for the cohort.

This would be the anti money ball approach. And doubtful he was drafted that high because of Wemby, as he is an alien of a human and truly one of a kind.
Drafting on projected ceiling when that raw is truly an art - I guess someone that young and raw will buy a GM an additional year or two before they get punted.

He was drafted that high because the draft was historically weak at the top and teams picking 1-5 generally swing for the fences rather than play it safe. His nationality had nothing to do with it.
French players have been drafted (and drafted too high) for many years before Wemby hit puberty.
I keep seeing people talk about NBA teams trying to find another Wemby as if they weren't looking for 7-foot athletes forever. Porzingis (he was called the Unicorn!), Giannis, etc. Wemby just happened to be the uber-prospect.

The NBA picks based on age, build, and potential. It’s why Clingan (sophomore rim runner who evidently has SERIOUS offense issues) was picked above Edey (5th year low post player who is 2x NPOY). Same with why Sanogo (F4 MOP) wasn’t drafted at all while Lively was a lottery pick. Some playstyles are just more preferable than others
Sarr is a 19 year old 7’0 guy that plays more like a SG than a C. They drafted him for what he could be as a 23 year old, not what he is now
Edey is going to have a better season than Clingan, but the reason why Clingan was consensus a higher pick is because after 2 years of NBA experience, Clingan will be the same age Edey is now. His potential is much higher because of his age and playstyle. Sarr could be a super bust, he could also be a unicorn. That’s the risk that typically is worth taking for a team that is bad enough that they pick top 3

I think the Big East players in general were undervalued/underrated in the draft. They may not have been lottery picks and perennial all-stars, but I think Kolek and Scheierman are going to have nice careers and impact some inpact on winning teams in the future.
Like many, I think Castle has the highest upside of all the rookies. When he committed to UConn, after reading what coaches had to say about him, how he takes a weakness in his game and not works only to make that part of the game serviceable but his goal is to turn it into an asset, he should be nicknamed 'Doomsday' after the superman villain. I just think the kid will continue to grow and blossom, especially where he is and what is surrounding him right now.
