At the NBA level, they have worked hard to adjust officiating to keep some freedom of movement and promote offense. True, they just walked some of that back this year by calling fewer defensive fouls on the perimeter from shooting players jumping into their defenders. But overall, they understand that the maximum physicality game, a la the 1990s into early 2000s, is not something to be encouraged. In fact both the NBA and WNBA went another level beyond and added a defensive 3 second rule to open up the lane. NCAA ball seems behind the times, both compared to the NBA/WNBA and often international ball.
